Huge guilty pleasure read; dramatic, a little ridiculous, a little cheesy, but exciting nontheless.
I've seen this series at Target and Borders but never gave them a second look, as I'm not one to read this type of YA, I just assumed, from the covers, that this was about annoyingly pretty and popular girls chasing making out with football players at school and stabbing each other in the back, or some teen soap-opera like thing. I caught the pilot of the show when it was on and realized this was actually a mystery series, a bit like gossip girl (a show I will admit to watching, but not reading) where a mysterious someone is spilling secrets via text messages and emails..popular pretty girl secrets, so it seemed....eh, but when the supposed sender of the messages is a girl who has been missing for three years, and those messages seem to almost be sent from the grave..well I realized I wanted to know who the heck A was, which COULD mean watching the series every week, or it could also mean reading 4 books and getting to the answer much quicker. I'm not a patient person, so books it is.
It was a very quick read, I started it tonight and finished it this morning (1am)-ish, and sure, it's very desperate house wives teen edition meets gossip girl, but I have to admit, as each secret came to light I got more into it. If I suddenly start watching general hospital, or buying designer sunglasses please kill me.
Good, quick summer reading. I rated this 4 stars, not for the writing, there is nothing out of the world about that, and not even for the characters (though their secrets do flesh them out more than characters in other books) but for the hook, the way it makes you want to keep reading and finding out more.

i definitely prefer the tv series over the books but this was still a quick and easy read that managed to be pretty entertaining. there’s obviously a lot of issues with it and the way some things are portrayed and because i’ve seen the show i wasn’t surprised by anything. i’m not sure if i’ll continue on with the series, at the moment i’m not really compelled to.

I'm reading books that I would have liked as a kid and considering I loved the TV show, I wanted to see what this was about. I enjoyed this and she did a good job setting the scene for future books.
DNF'd this about halfway. I just felt like not every man in that town had to be a scumbag and that's lowkey what it felt like, and also the amount of prepubescent girls making out with seniors in high school or high school girls with actual adults was just too much. Don't get me wrong - I know what Sara Shepard is commenting on, but it just wasn't for me. It also just felt too 2012. Sorry.
I'm giving this book 2 stars based on that it makes me sad if this is how girls today think that they should be/act today. There are enough pressures of being a teenage with this propaganda going around! Otherwise it was a fast guilty read.
