I’m certain I’ve read this before, but picked it up at a rummage sale to give it another go. Still pretty forgettable though, honestly.

It was a good, quick read but a bit predictable.

Enjoyed Anita Shreves clean and vivid depictions of the characters and their environments.

This was my first Anita Shreve book, and I really enjoyed it. Though the beginning is a bit slow, after about 1/3 the way through, things really start picking up. How awful to find out first...that you pilot husband has died (along with over 100 passengers) in a terrible plane crash, second...that it's all over the news that it may be because he committed suicide and third...that you find out you never really knew the man you were married to at all. This is what happens to Kathryn Lyons.

I won't go into the whole story, as it's been done many times already here, but the emotions this poor woman goes through are absolutely heartbreaking. And on top of it all, she has a teenage daughter she's trying to protect. I can't say that I was shocked by the outcome of the story, I pretty much expected the gist of what happened, but I was a little surprised with WHY it happened.

In the end, I definitely recommend this book. It'll keep you turning the pages, if for no other reason then to figure out just what happened on that plane, and why it went down. And I loved the beginning chapters alternating between the present day and the past, when Kathryn and Jack first met, and how their relationship progressed. Overall, it was a very good book, and I'll definitely be reading more from Ms. Shreve

A quick, harmless read about grief and secrets. Certainly some predictable elements, some handled sloppily, but when I let myself accept the book for what it was, I found it enjoyable enough to finish. I appreciated that Shreve approached sensuality without exploiting it, and respected the readers enough to keep it from becoming a love story all together.

This book was so predictable that I figured out what was going to happen just by reading the back cover.

When a plane goes down as a result of a terrorist plot, the pilot's wife discovers that her husband had another wife across the ocean. That discovery leads to others.

This has been on my shelf of "Favorites" for years, and I've been looking forward to revisiting it. It does not disappoint. While the subject is difficult to read, the author's ability to communicate the emotional roller-coaster of grieving is sublime. Should be required reading for all aspiring novelists.
