The fantastical marginalized minority allegory is a VERY hard line to walk. Often times it gets muddled or watered down or contradicts itself. I'm not sure the overly saccharine approach helps in this matter. It's insistent and the message simple, as the world should be I'm not arguing against that. But it feels a bit shallow because much like Zootopia, it all gets wrapped up so nicely.
Learning that this was partly inspired by real world events like the Sixties Scoop (something I knew of tangentially, but not by name) or other forced separations of children, this idealistic fantasy becomes significantly harder to swallow and enjoy. Pulling inspiration from real world events and making them fantasy is a tale as old as time, and white authors have been co-opting atrocities enacted to the marginalized long before this & will likely continue to do so.
This is wherein my issue lies. Not so much saying that only certain people can write about certain things, but that they should approach with caution. Even without knowing anything that inspired the book, it already comes across very White Saviour, the hapless and ignorant man who believes in fairness but still has biases to unlearn & magically is able to enact widespread and effective change once he learns better. Throwing in the historical context of the inspiration makes it reek of it so much more.
It's just very hard to separate the ideas from the history or context it's pulled from. But then again, I'm not white

3.5 stars — Even as a form of escapism, I think this book was a little too saccharine for me. It seemed like one character or another had a pointed speech or lesson every few pages. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed its whimsical tone and found that the last quarter of the story had just the right amount of sweetness (sorry).
