I don't think I really understood a lot of this book, but I really liked the last 25%. I thought that it had wonderful things to say about the importance of communities, relationships, collaboration, and love.

This book paints an incredible picture of revolutionary Africa without allowing the political atmosphere to mask the society within. The author creates powerful, intriguing characters that I found very easy to connect with. Even the more villainous characters show a side of human nature that adds great texture to the story. I found the story a little slow at first, but overall, this book is moving and artfully written!

Well worth reading--how the author can make literature out of agriculture is fascinating.

Amazing book! The narrative flows between characters with a skill I’m not sure I’ve encountered. Truly beautiful, highly recommended. Now will have to look for more of her stories.

There is no writer whose words I have yet encountered that comes anywhere near as skillful and gifted in the realm of writing in unison with nature. Bessie Head takes these forces and elements of surroundings, of the earth and beautifully merges them in with the plot, the characters and their ideals. Her writing is one with nature. A gift.

– page 188
