Addison is incredibly good at world-building, and I loved the glimpses we got of it here, but knowing that it made me wish she had leaned a little less heavily on Holmes canon.

If I had known it was a Sherlock retelling I wouldn't have read it. I had to force myself to read parts especially the Hound of Baskerville part.
I found the Vampire part underdeveloped.
The only reason I picked the book up was for the Jack The Ripper storyline, so disappointed when the story went away from that.

Can I give this 6 stars?? What a wholesome book! The seamless integration of the supernatural and the Sherlockian London made this book a delight to read. It was lovely to see the Sherlock character portrayed as friendly and that Watson wasn’t as clueless as he is usually depicted. I loved the relationship between the excitable Crow and the cantankerous Doyle and was thoroughly amused by the irony of an angel befriending a hell-hound. (My copy might be completely tabbed whenever any character dropped angel lore!)
The concept of gender added another layer to the story while also pointing out flaws with viewpoints of the time such as the issue of rich countrymen adding foreign treasures to their collections or some of the gender norms.
Some readers complained that the story arcs were too similar to the original Sherlock adventures, but I found myself intrigued with how Addison would interpret the stories with the supernatural element. It was, in my opinion, one of the best parts of the book.
The Angel of the Crows wasn’t perfect. While I loved the climax scene in the Jack the Ripper case, I felt that it was a bit rushed. Despite that, his book has definitely earned its place on my favorites shelf.

3.5 stars. Lovely retelling of Sherlock Holmes, with an angelic detective and a gender-bent sidekick. Wish it had moved a little further afield from its fanfic origins...but these two social misfits wrestling to make their way in the world on their own terms has Addison's trademark kindness in its bones. I just needed a little more story to go with all the atmosphere.
Was recommended this by a Waterstones employee when telling him I was into detective stories, fantasy & wanted a new female author. He was very excited to tell me about this book and I'm grateful he did.
I really enjoyed this alternate take on Sherlock Holmes adventures, with delightful fantasy and supernatural elements woven into the worldbuilding. Crow and Dr. J. H. Doyle were captivating and enjoyable to read about, and they made for a good catalyst to get involved with each mystery and twist.
Needless to say, this is one of my favourite books I've read this year and I am 100% going to read more by this author!

Not bad, it started very slow and it took me a while to get invested in the story and the characters but I enjoyed the fantasy and occult aspect of the book.
I can honestly say I've never read anything quite like this, which is high praise. The Angel of the Crows was a treat to read, and I'm already longing for more adventures.
