For me this was a 3.5 star read. I really liked the double POVs because it allows you to see how differently the client sees things. Like sometimes there are things that appear very simple and have very apparent solutions but when you get into the clients head you have the opportunity to realise why it is so difficult to execute said solutions.

Ginnys writing wasn’t the strongest point of this book and I would not have cared about this if Ginny wasn’t involved with writing as her job. Maybe because she was a writer made it harder for her to write something that was simple and expressive, it felt kinda forced and over embellished at some points.

Overall I likes this book a lot, it really shows you how sometimes things aren’t as scary as your mind thinks and emphasizes the importance of taking small steps towards overcoming your fears

I really enjoyed this book, also as I identified a lot with Ginny. The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is because it might not be a book for everyone. With that being said, I think that anyone committed with therapy, and interested in psychology as such might really like it.
I read this through a Kindle, and by the “suggested” highlights I got a feeling that only therapists read this book.

An extremely interesting concept for a book, with therapist and client each writing a report after each session to be exchanged and discussed some weeks later. A highly experimental therapeutic approach, I admire Yalom's daring in attempting and publishing it. The potential for increased insight appeals to me.

As always, Yalom's honesty is striking. In this particular instance, I found it a little unsettling, however, particularly with regard to his somewhat singular focus on the client's feelings towards him and the possibility of some attraction between them. Beyond simply manifesting his general attention to the hear and now in therapy, this seemed to betray some particular hope or agenda on his part that seems inappropriate for a therapeutic relationship.

The postscripts lost me a little bit, perhaps as my attention and interest had just waned at that point, having been mostly satisfied by the main body of the text. I felt a similar distaste as Yalom himself expressed for his going over of specific techniques and plans applied with this client. I thought this was evident from the text itself and laying it bare at the close felt unnecessary and slightly dehumanising, although I suspect it may have been necessary as a defence against expected criticisms from other professionals in the field.

Overall a very interesting book that I have some ambiguous feelings about.
