Let me tell you why I absolutely love this book:
1. Todd and Viola - they're probably one of the best YA literary couples of all time. why? No insta-love and a real connection between them.
2. I actually felt what the characters were feeling! This hasn't happened in soooooo long. I'm so sick of 2D characters with no empathy. I actually could feel my heart wrenching when the characters felt something horrible.
3. The plot line is DIFFERENT!!! (hard to believe, I know). There's no vampires, or werewolves, or zombies...it's actual good Dystopic literature.
I would definitely list this series as one of the best things I've read in 2013 (if not in my existence). I am recommending these books to everyone and everything.

Spoiler
It literally took them 3 books to finally kiss, and, although I was cheering them on the whole time to kiss already, I'm really glad Patrick Ness decided to wait because I feel their relationship grew more.2. Todd and Viola (and dear Manchee) are some of my favourite characters I've ever read. The entire trilogy is full of conflict and difficult choices, and they handle it wonderfully. These books are smart, thoughtful, and at times, heartbreaking, and I'm sad that more people haven't read them!
[Oct. 2017] Finally finally FINALLY able to read these books, and I cannot say enough about them; there are treasures galore within these pages. I won't go into all of them because we'd be here all year, but there is a very good chance it is now my favorite book series of the decade.

I really did love this series. It's more a 4.5 for me. It's true that the first is the best, cascading down, and although the third book was tiresome in parts it also didn't totally dissappoint me with tropes I expected from a YA novel. The third book definately gave itself a difficult task of trying to write from the perspective of the indigenous population that had no language, and there are definately some questionable plotholes within that story. But WHAT a story. It felt original. It felt raw. It felt real (ish), no one was all good, no one all bad (sorta) the all bad were mad which is maybe predictable. I liked the love between Todd and Viola being mostly about sacrifice and loyalty. I like that it was unspoken for most the book. I really was sad about Todd at the end and relieved (but felt the cliche) that he came back. Honestly I wanted to keep going in their world.
4.5 A very strong dystopian trilogy. More complex and less black & white exploration of the human condition than The Hunger Games.
