3.5 stars. Entertaining and well written but mostly an escapist read.
I really enjoyed this story. About halfway through, I figured out that Rose was up to something. Even though it was a bit predictable, I found the story enjoyable. The ending left it open, which added interest.

This was a very well written book. I think Fern was a very good character, and I loved seeing things from her perspective as well as the diary of her sister’s perspective. I loved the unreliable narration. I think it was very cleverly written in that way. I just wish it wasn’t so obvious, what was going to happen. I am definitely interested in reading more by Hepworth for sure.

ARC from Net Galley
Twins, Fern and Rose, live near each other in England.
Fern has a sensory processing disorder and Rose has diabetes.
Rose wants a baby, and Fern doesn’t, but decides to have one for Rose. Rose doesn't even have to ask -- she just leaves prenatal vitamins laying around and Rose takes it upon herself to find a man to have sex with and get pregnant. Luckily, Fern meets a guy she calls Wally (b/c he looks like Where's Waldo) at the library where she works. He is homeless, living in his van, and seems to be on the spectrum as well. Oh, and he's a millionaire.
Rose has always taken care of Fern. Fern is not able to be trusted to make decisions, and once killed a boy named Billy.
Spoiler: Rose writes in her diary that she went to the bathroom and when she returned Billy had drowned b/c Fern tried to "help" him win the "who could hold their breath underwater the longest" contest, but really Rose told Fern to do it. Rose said she'd tell her when 40 seconds was up but she let it go on a lot longer than 40 seconds.
Spoiler: Rose has always made it seem like Fern is incompetent. She made Fern rely on Rose. She wanted a baby and knew Fern would have one for her. Rose went to the assisted living center where their mum lived and shot her up with insulin, killing her, b/c she was telling Fern not to let Rose raise the baby. Oh, and Rose had shot their mum up with insulin 10 years ago, but it didn't kill her that time, but it left her unable to speak.....until recently. dun dun duuuuunnnnnn
Rose is exposed and thrown in jail, Fern and Wally stay together and keep the baby, and that's all that happens. It's a thriller told in dual unreliable narrator chapters. Rose's diary is fabricated to make it look like their mum was crazy awful and that Fern is dangerous. But once you hit around 50% the whole thing is obvious and there's not much thrill.
Also, Fern was sometimes very literal and obviously on the spectrum, but sometimes wasn't at all. This was jarring to read and brought me out of the book often.
