Great vibes!! Probably my least favourite of the three kid Kingfisher books I’ve read, but also such a fun premise and Kingfisher easily makes each character feel vivid with their own quirks and flaws.

3.75 Nice little grade-school fantasy with some worldbuilding, but mainly focused on characters and relationships. Has some good ideas to make kids think and a beautiful and realistic female friendship. I like that not having magic is not grounds for ostracism like in some settings I might name, even if it's still something that makes youngsters anxious.

Another delightful whimsical magical tale by T. Kingfisher. Reminded me of Diana Wynn’s Jones’s “The Magicians of Caprona.”

I expected a YA book going into this, but the is s childrens story. A very magical and cute childrens story with good tension and an animal companion with an affinity for shiny things.
The world and magic are painted with easy language and few but effective words. The magic system is quite interesting. Payne is a bit annoying at times. This book is a nice story about friendship, family and working together.

I haven’t read any of TK’s Ursula Vernon books but this really felt like a kid book to me. Which is fine! But not what I expected. I thought it would be more like Defensive Baking with more “grown up” themes.
It’s my least favourite of her books I’ve read (which is not everything but getting close), though the bar is spectacularly high.
This is cute and fun and I can imagine buying a copy for my middle grade niblings who love to draw
