There were some things I really liked about this book. I thought the characters were great, and I really enjoyed the author's writing style. But there were some things that didn't work so well for me.
First off, I don't think the precis really sets up the feel of this book. It makes it seem like Charlie is coerced through the whole thing, but in actuality, Charlie is the one who initiates the idea for a piece about Duke. She initially sets out to interview him because she thinks it will help her career, and she can finally get a job at a real newspaper, but after mentioning it to her boss and then later telling him she doesn't think she'll get access to him, then he issues the ultimatum (not to be fired, but to be demoted to his assistant). So, Charlie is really kind of a shark. Not that that's a bad thing. I liked her character. I just was expecting something totally different going into this.
I think the beginning of the book is really well-done and fleshed out, but when we get to where Charlie and Duke actually start doing things together, it just goes way too fast. It feels really crammed together. They go from no relationship, to banging, to maybe being in love in a span of like 3 chapters (which is only 2 weeks in the story, which seems too short as well).
But my biggest gripe is the climax/break up & get back together near the end of the story. I seriously groaned and had to step away from my ereader because it was so cliche and just ruined the whole vibe of the story for me.
I would have liked a bit more actual relationship time between the MCs, and something a bit more unexpected for their big drama moment.
It was an ok read overall, and I would read something else by the author, I just wasn't a super big fan of this one.

Power Play is the first book in the Boston Blade series and I loved Charlie and Duke. Charlie needs a breakthrough article at her failing paper and pursues Duke the star goalie of the Blades even though he originally says no. I loved seeing their attraction and feelings grow the more they get to know each other. This story is a fun quick listen told from mostly Charlie’s POV with and Elizabeth does a great job telling the story as does Joe Hempel with the epilogue.
This is a strong first book in the Blades Hockey series by Maria Luis. This book is a quick read with relatively low angst and some pretty humorous moments. Charlie and Duke were good together. I’m eager to meet more of the Blades.

Do I recommend this book: 👍
Will I read the next book in the series: 👍
A fun hockey romance read from the audible plus cataloge. Would recommend if you’re in the mood for something light.
This was such a fun and quick read! I am so glad I grabbed this on my kindle when it was free earlier this month because I loved every second of this story, and I will definitely be picking up other books by this author in the future. I am a sucker for hockey romances and will always love me an FMC who doesn't quite view herself the way others do and our MMC is the one who helps her change that, so you know that I absolutely loved this couple. Add in the fact that ya girl used to play hockey and was able to sort of hold her own against the pro, and I was one happy camper.
I loved this book for exactly what it was. A fun contemporary romance with tension and enemies to lovers vibes. I really liked that the conflict wasn't really contrived, which is something I have seen a lot of in quick contemporary romances recently. The conflict in this book worked because it was something that was brewing from the first page, so it made sense and didn't feel forced or pointless. I like the slow, short grovelling phase that Charlie went through to win Duke back. I loved their banter and the super sweet ending. All in all, this was a sweet and fun read that will bring me back to this author in the future when I am needing these vibes!
