Fun “re-write” of Pride and Prejudice, from the stand point of Elizabeth accepting Darcy’s first proposal. Definitely loved it and enjoyed!

This retelling felt very conservative, but for a fic it still made me happy and I finished it in almost a day. I wish the circumstances of the first proposal had been changed, I thought at first that Col. Fitzwilliam must not have told Elizabeth about Darcy and Bingley and Jane, but overall it was a fun read that had enough swoon-worthy lines to make up for some modern descriptions.

I enjoyed the first few chapters but this retelling quickly went off the rails for me. Darcy and Elizabeth were not faithful characterizations as Elizabeth was too meek and Darcy too awful.

Also, much of the writing was too modern
to feel faithful to the time and source material.

This one bordered for me. The interaction between Mr. and Mrs. Bennet was out of character but not necessarily in a bad way, just odd when you know their relationship from the original story. I think the author did a good job of molding the interactions for the better. I appreciated how Elizabeth was honest with Darcy about not loving him but open to his advances during their engagement. Though my heart went out to Darcy as the story built. I am happy with how they seemed to come together with the different obstacles. This may be a re-read in the future. Of course with all the obstacles they overcame, I would love more story after their HEA.

It’s fanfic with an interesting premise - how can these characters’ relationship develop as it does in canon if Elizabeth says yes to the first proposal?

I don’t think how the author answers this question is particularly plausible, but reading this book was an interesting diversion.

On reflection, this novel is so much more conservative at its core than the source material.
