I was somewhat expecting another cringe-worthy Pride and Prejudice retelling, but I was more than pleasantly surprised. The writing style is as near to Jane Austen’s as possible. Characters are believable and true to the original, the plot is well paced and the lovestory everthying you could wish for. Bonus points for humour :) The dinner scene with the cocoa trees is absolutely fantastic <3
So these are some of my notes I wrote down as I read the novel, I think it will have to do for a review:
"This is extremely unconvincing, Wickham would not have the courage to act like this in front of Darcy. This is a P&P variation, but it works within the original novel and continues from a point in it, so the characters have to be consistent with the ones written by Austen. These characters have departed from that entirely. I find Lizzy and Darcy unlikable in this variation"
To be honest I think, having made Elizabeth say yes to Darcy's first proposal without changing any of the circumstances that led to her saying yes, but just a change of her personality, is what made this so un-enjoyable and hard to believe for me.
"His [Darcy] obsession with her eyes is too much" ... really.. just count how many times he mentioned her fine eyes in this book. What a snoozefest!
and when Elizabeth finally fell in love with Darcy: "I can't even call this a slow burn romance. It's just slow"
I'm sure the author worked hard on this book and I respect that, but I have not enjoyed this book at all.
Thank you.

There were some moments when I felt that Elizabeth/Darcy would never behave that way; that said, the book was a delightful series of what ifs, some of which could actually be relevant to the original storyline as well.
obviously not Austen, but nevertheless fun - not worth rereading though
This book was absolutely delightful… as a long standing fan of p&p I was nervous that this story would lack the same voice as the original; however, the author did a great job of honing into this writing style and overall capturing the voices of the characters so well. It brought me so much joy throughout and I highly recommend to janes fans!
This is the first variation/retelling of a classic novel I've read so far.
I thought the writing fit the time period that it wanted to portray and that the idea of the story itself was intriguing. I did however have some issues with the length of the book and the overall pacing.

I'm on a retelling kick - this was recommended on tik tok as "the best retelling" that creator had read. I found it enjoyable, although a little drawn out - some of the emotional baggage was dragged on a bit too long, but seeing how the story unfolds if Lizzy says yes the first time was interesting, especially between Wickham and Lydia. A fun distraction!
I disliked Elizabeth and Darcy for 85% of this book, so... good job I guess?
