It's not often I read retelling of a classic novel. I generally don't like them, finding that many of them cannot stay true to the original characters, even with generous additions to the plot. This, however, was one book I thoroughly enjoyed.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, while one of my many favourites, has always been a little overrated by some I think, especially since the 1995 BBC's Mini-Series highlighted the many 'talents' of Colin Firth's Mr Darcy. Don't get me wrong, Mr Darcy is certainly worth the hype (and Colin Firth's interpretation is definitely my favourite) but I have always found Elizabeth Bennet lacking as a heroine and her faults very often overlooked by fans of the novel and series.
For me, we never see very much growth from her character, even once she realizes her faults, her redemption of them only applies to Mr Darcy and her judgmental opinions of others remain very much in tact, at least, this is my perspective.
However, in this retelling, time is taken in length to explore Elizabeth's feelings more in depth and I may be shot down by purists for saying so, Lara's interpretation of Elizabeth Bennet has made her a much more likable and relatable character, so much so that this version of her character beats out the original for me.
While I think maybe, the obvious physical affection shown throughout the later part of the book, may not have been entirely approved of in that period of society, it loaned itself well to capturing the private moments of the evolution of Elizabeth's feelings and Darcy's recognition and recompense for his own faults he truly discovers about himself along the way.
Unequal Affections has placed itself in one of my favourite lists for the year of 2022 and is currently available in the Aduible Plus catalogue for members free of charge.

Sendo eu uma grande fã do clássico Orgulho e Preconceito, foi com altas expetativas que abri este livro, intitulado Unequal Affections: A Pride and Prejudice Retelling. Tal como o nome indica, este livro explora uma vertente diferente da obra mais famosa de Jane Austen, pegando num acontecimento e mudando os subsequentes de forma a responder a um dos muitos "E ses" que cada leitor formula depois de terminar uma obra.
Neste caso, Lara S. Ormiston, pega na primeira proposta de Mr. Darcy, em Hunsford e imagina o que teria acontecido se Elizabeth Bennet tivesse a aceitado em vez de a recusar. Embora a premissa me tenha parecido um pouco contra a personalidade da personagem (pois Elizabeth criticou a sua amiga Charlotte por se ter casado por "razões mercenárias"), resolvi abstrair-me deste facto e ver o que a autora faria com esta premissa. Afinal, avizinhava-se um casamento arranjado e o meu casal fictício favorito estava envolvido... o que mais podia querer?
Devo dizer que gostei bastante desta leitura. Ormiston explora em profundidade os temperamentos de Mr. Darcy e de Elizabeth Bennet sem que eles tenham sofrido a reviravolta que Austen lhes dá, após Hunsford, no livro original. Elizabeth aceita a proposta de Darcy e ambos terão de conviver durante o período de noivado.
Isto significa que o orgulho e intransigência de Darcy, sem o inflamado discurso que Elizabeth profere no livro original, continuam intocados e é através de conversas e convívios que Elizabeth e Darcy se começam realmente a conhecer enquanto pessoas. É fascinante ver como Mr. Darcy é um homem bem intencionado mas orgulhoso e que a sua maneira de ser acaba por ofender a Elizabeth. É também bastante interessante ver como Elizabeth ajuda Darcy a conhecer-se a si próprio e a tornar-se menos inflexível. Por outro lado, Elizabeth aprende que Darcy não é tão horrível como ela pensava, sendo até um bom homem. E sente-se culpada por ter aceite a proposta e por o estar a magoar, e por ter traído os seus princípios.
Não vou dizer que gostei mais deste livro do que de Orgulho e Preconceito, até porque são obras diferentes. Mas tenho de admitir que o facto de Mr. Darcy não ter mudado da noite para o dia e de o casal ter tido de se conhecer muito melhor antes de Elizabeth se apaixonar foi refrescante.
No geral, uma reformulação da obra original de que gostei bastante e que recomendo a qualquer fã da obra.

Great writing. But the back-and-forth of does she, doesn't she; does he, doesn't he got a little too tiresome.
