Alaric is an adventurer and writer who, with the help of being really hot and having had a popular unlicensed play written about him, has become a famous heartthrob (to include prints of him that ladies put up on their walls, like Georgian Teen Beat). Willa, who Alaric inexplicably calls Evie, is a very pretty orphan who knows that the path to stability is following all the rules and making sure you only wear glasses and read nerdy stuff in private. She and her bestie decide to collect marriage proposals until the end of their second season; they are extremely good at it. They spend 6 weeks at Alaric's family castle for a house party and fall in love. Also there is a pet skunk.
That's about it! There is some pretty wacky third act drama with a one dimensional villain who is full of storytelling potential actually, especially compared to Willa and Alaric, who are pretty boring! I want that book, to be honest.

This is the second historical romance I’ve ever read and I really enjoyed it! Alaric and Willa were the perfect opposites attract story. Their banter and chemistry was amazing. At times the story did drag so that’s why I gave it 4 stars. With that said, I definitely like Eloisa James writing and will be continuing this series.
I’ve never been a romance novel reader, and the Wilde series is my first (they were bought for me as a gag gift). I ended up hooked on the characters with the first one I read. I’m pretty repulsed by the cheesy, graphic love scenes and I’m not a fan of the transparent plots of the series.
The plot of this novel is by far the most cheesy and obvious of the three.
However, for a romance novel, I think the author deserves some credit. She’s a literature professor who is married to an actual Italian knight. As far as I assume romance novels go, the writing is done well. Her historical research is accurate. So, for a romance novel, a great deal of thought seems to go into each novel in the Wilde series.

I have had some recent disappointments with Eloisa James, so I'm thrilled to say I enjoyed this one. It was straightforward - nothing that happened was a surprise - with relatively low angst and great banter.
It's refreshing to get an HR without a TSTL heroine (I've had a run of bad luck, lately, with lots of heroines that I want to strangle... so this was a great relief). I'm interested to see what happens with North and Diana in the next book... and a little worried because Diana seemed like a brat in this book. But we'll see.
