Writing a spoiler review so I can revisit later as more books are released and I can refresh my memory.
Alarick is an author, who travels the world and writes about his journeys. He hasn't been back to England since his older brother, Horatius, died in the bogs on the family property. He's returning because his older brother, and heir to the dukedom now, is engaged.
When he arrives back in England, he finds out that he's a celebrity of sorts due to his books and the engravings that are made of his adventures. Ladies have crushes on him, etc.
At the betrothal ball, he finds his brother, North, has changed to catch the eye of his fiancee. She's very fashionable, and North is not. He's besotted with her but she clearly doesn't feel for him because she usually flees anytime he's approaching her. North now wears a huge powdered wig and other such fancy clothing.
Willa catches Alarick's eye. She's an orphaned daughter who is living with Mrs. Gray and Lavinia Gray since the age of 9. She doesn't like spotlight or adventure after her parent's death, so she isn't interested in Alarick. She doesn't like the female attention he gets or that he's famous.
There's a play that was written and performed about Alarick, which was all fictionalized, called Wilde in Love. Willa has never seen it. Alarick hates it even though he's never seen it.
Alarick woos Willa and shows her that he is Alarick, not Lord Wilde his "ego" from the books. They agree to marry.
During this, Prudence shows up. Author of the play, obsessed and in love with Alarick, and delusional.
Diana ends up fleeing her betrothal party, leaving North without a word. Prudence tells Willa that Alarick is waiting for her out in the bog. Ends up holding Willa at gunpoint and forcing her out into the bog and leaving her there to die.
Alarick figures out what's going on, the skunk he gave Willa from the traveling merchant sprayed Prudence and leads him on the path to Willa. He saves her.
They end up married and they resume traveling around the world and Alarick writes about it, even though that's what Willa thought she didn't want, though she clearly changed her mind. They travel, have kids, and live HEA.
After Diana jilted North, he bought a commission to go to war in America. He finally tracked her down before he left, with the intention of helping her since he knew her mother had disowned her and she was in poverty. When he finds her, she has a child in a ramshackle place and he flees, thinking she cheated on him during their betrothal and got pregnant.

Maybe it was my mood, but I couldn't wait for this book to be over. I am an EJ fan (in fact my very first HR was Duchess in Love and I was hooked) but this book both dragged and skipped around for me. I had a hard time following the conversations sometimes. The relations between Alaric and Willa was not very believable. Why did he fall in love with her so quickly? Why did she finally decide to agree to marry him? Sadly a shallow book. I did love the interactions between Lavinia and Parth. I would like to read their book.

Looking forward to continuing the series and finding out what the rest of the Wilde’s get up to.
I'm a bit up and down with Eloisa James - sometimes I'm a little put off by her writing. But this book was very entertaining, particularly Alaric's reaction to being infamous.
I received this as an ARC from Edelweiss for an honest review.
I think this might be my favorite Eloisa James. I've read all her books. She's one of the few authors that I'll read anything from. I REALLY enjoyed this one. I loved all the main characters as well as their side characters. Often in these romances, the conflict boils down to the fact that the main characters don't actually talk to each other, but this is NOT one of those romances. I very much look forward to the next ones in this series.

So glad that's over. I don't judge anyone for liking romance novels but they are not for me. And I only picked this one up for a grade in class. Hopefully I won't have to do that again.
