I was disappointed in Wilde in Love. I just couldn't get into it. I had great hopes when the story began, but it wasn’t long before the characters became flat and I didn’t really care what happened to them. I might try this book again some other time to see if my boredome with it is because of my mood or it's the book.

This grew on me, and I am now very invested in this family, mostly because I loved the Duke so much.
Thank goodness, James seems to be back in form. I was a little disappointed in the last few books, but this one was her usual awesome story. Banter, clothing, a tiny amount of angst, strong women - all the good things.
This was all very meh. Alaric is a cardboard cut out of a hero, back from the wilds of Russia and Africa who is ready to settle down at the first sight of super duper boring Willa. The conflict mostly hinged on Willa understanding that Alaric is sincere in his willingness to put down roots and her fear of being put in the public spotlight thanks to the popular play loosely based on Alaric's real life memoirs. Willa is constantly described as a lover of bawdy jokes and someone with an edge, but she is IRL extremely prim and proper. She invents an alter ego to even consider unbecoming behavior.
And I feel like I can usually overlook some of the typical romance tropes, but I just can't with the heroine-in-peril. Willa gets kidnapped AT GUNPOINT! By a crazy jealous woman! And forced to walk into a bog! Alaric will do anything to save the woman he loves! Even venture into the bog that killed his brother!
I know James is capable of a stronger storyline. I hate to admit it though, I might read the second book. I loved Lavinia, a woman with actual vivaciousness.

This was funny in places. And I didn’t expect it to be funny and that’s probably while I enjoyed it so much. I’ve also been on a bookishly smart heroine in histfic vibe lately.
Plus I got sent an ARC of book 3 (and wanted to read books 1&2 before I got to that ARC).
