Re-read November 2023: I forgot just how horrible this specific brand of fallen angel/vampire/werewolf teen romance was. I knew even back then that it was bad, but I honestly don’t remember it ever being THIS bad.
~~~
First Read (4/5): So what can I say that hasn't already been said? Yes, I know it's a problematic book but that doesn't mean that I didn't really enjoy reading it. This isn't the best book in the world and if you go into thinking it will be you'll be very disappointed. If you leave this book thinking that it's one of the best books you've ever read I don't know what to tell you other than you must not have read many books honestly.
So you must be asking why in the world would you give this 4 stars Katie? Well let me tell you. I know it's problematic and the relationship is problematic and blah blah blah but I just can't help but fly through this book. It's my guilty pleasure read and I found myself reading this in one sitting because I needed to know what would happen next.
I don't disagree with the people who hate this book and I won't even try to justify it as a great book because it's not but damn is it an addicting book and for that reason I give it 4 stars.
This book definitely does not have a role model or send a positive message. It is very much the opposite but it was entertaining.
I really enjoyed this book. It's just a real classy teenage mystical drama. I've read this entire book in a day because i just couldn't put it down. I fell in love with Nora Grey and Patch. Their love reminds me of me and me boyfriend. No love is perfect but you can always find ways to make it work.
I can't wait to read the rest!
I enjoyed this but the writing is difficult to stay engaged in. Story is a cool concept but not executed to the highest potential.
I feel like thirteen years old Inês would eat this shit up, but twenty three years old Inês is just confused and bored.
The plot was confusing to say the least, and Nora was skeptical of everyone and their mother, but when Patch literally admits he wanted to KILL her, she brushes it off and moves on with her life. Like girl? Do you need a free therapy consult? I’ll hook you up. (I still like Patch though, I kind of get it girl)
Am I reading the rest of the series? I’m not sure. I kind of liked the vibes, and I would like to see how this goes.
Some quotes:
“You’re messing up the game,” Patch said, still smiling. I caught his eye and couldn’t help but match his smile—briefly. “Hopefully not in your favor. Biggest dream?” I was proud of this one because I knew it would stump him. It required forethought.
“Kiss you.”
“That’s not funny,” I said, holding his eyes, grateful I didn’t stutter.
“No, but it made you blush.”
“Your eyes, Nora. Those cold, pale gray eyes are surprisingly irresistible.” He tipped his head sideways, as if to study me from a new angle. “And that killer curvy mouth.”
“You admit you’re doing this on purpose?”
“This?”
“This—provoking me.”
“Say ‘provoking’ again. Your mouth looks provocative when you do.”
“The blood vessels in Nora’s face are widening and her skin is warming,” Patch said. “She knows she’s being evaluated. She likes the attention, but she’s not sure how to handle it.”
“I am not blushing.”
“She’s nervous,” Patch said. “She’s stroking her arm to draw attention away from her face and down to her figure, or maybe her skin. Both are strong selling points.”
“When Coach asked for my list of desired characteristics in a mate, I gave him you.”
“Take that back.”
“Intelligent. Attractive. Vulnerable. You disagree?”
“Interested? We’re talking about you. I’m fascinated.” He smiled, and it was a fantastic smile. The effect was a ratcheted pulse—my ratcheted pulse.
“You scare me, and I’m not sure you’re good for me.”
“I could change your mind.”
“This is crazy,” I told Patch in an undertone.
“I’m crazy.” He was on the brink of smiling again. “About you.”
“Do you want to possess my body?”
“I want to do a lot of things to your body, but that’s not one of them.”
