Hush, Hush

3.56 AVERAGE

I read Hush, Hush back in 2009 as a teenager, and it left a lasting impression on me—I gave it a solid 4/5. The story follows Nora, a high school student who becomes entangled with the mysterious Patch, a fallen angel with a dark past and noticeable scars. There is chemistry and the tension between them kept me glued to the pages, constantly guessing his true intentions.

What I appreciated about Nora’s character was her journey of self-discovery, particularly as she navigates her feelings for Patch amid the chaos surrounding her. Her struggles make her relatable, adding a layer of depth to her character and highlight her growth throughout the story.

The mix of romance and supernatural elements created an engaging read that kept me invested, even when some plot twists felt predictable. The emotional stakes were high, and I found myself rooting for Nora as she faced the challenges of her tumultuous relationship with Patch.

4.75 ^^ Because at first, it wasn't a big crush.... But now.... I definitely am in love with Patch :p Pfewww, what a man!

Okay, look, I tried to like this. Right? Another hyped book from my early hs years. But it's trash. It's poorly written (obviously a product of it's time), and just not worth the time I spent reading it solely for a book competition. That's pretty much all I've got to say except for the added "Now I need to cleanse my soul".

Absolutely loved this book! The only thing I didn't like about it is the fact that now I am going to have to go by the other books in this series because I am addicted.

Like a better written Twilight where all the vampires are angels, but just as scary. I liked it and will be picking up the next in the series.

Re-read in 2016: 3 Stars (Whoa, it's been 6 years since I picked up this book?! No wonder I couldn't remember anything!) If I only gave this book 3 stars back in 2010, why would I read it again? Well, I found the next two books in this series on sale at a store for like $2 each and I bought them. I thought, "It's been so long since I've read this, maybe I'll give it another chance and I can continue with the series." I know, I know--my spending habits have flawed thinking. But I did sucessfully re-read Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick and thought, "Hey, this isn't too bad. Not great, but not bad." Thus, I'll be continuing on with the series because I have the next two books sitting on my shelf waiting to be read.

Onto the actual review! 2016 Edition!
I didn't have extremely high hopes for this book. I remembered it being decent in the past, and that was in the middle of my Twilight-hyped days, where these kinds of Paranormal Romances with mysterious, brooding and moody male characters and damsel-in-distress female leads were all the rage. So I thought, "Okay, I'm not going to like this now, probably, if I didn't love it back then--" but actually, I was a bit impressed. Sure, I had some issues with this book, but I read it for what it was: a Paranormal Romance about Angels and a mysterious, brooding and moody male character and damsel-in-distress female lead. These kinds of stories take me back to my Twilight days and if I'm honest, I'll probably always have a soft spot for them. While reading Hush, Hush, I had a great time!

Becca Fitzpatrick, like I said in my review in 2010, (and the biggest thing I remember about this book) is a great crime-writer, in my opinion. Granted, I don't read that much crime (but I watch Dateline, 48 Hours, and the I.D channel like no one else) but I thought she did a very good job at making the tone creepy in this book. You truly feel like Nora Grey is in trouble, and someone is watching her, following her, and wants to do her harm. I definitely want to read more from this author.

Other than the crime/mystery aspect, I enjoyed the writing in this book. Some of Patch's lines were kind of cheesy and creepy at times, but it sucked me in and I wanted to see how everything was going to conclude. Back to Patch--he's probably the biggest issue I have with this book. He was always so sarcastic, mysterious, and innuendo-dropping that I had a hard time "falling in love with him," like I was supposed to
Spoiler--I think? I'm not even sure if Nora fell in love with him. She had some desire, but I felt like she was still pretty freaked out at the end.
I wish I would've felt more chemistry between Patch and Nora.

As for the other characters, I liked Vee a lot. She annoyed me a bit at the end, but there were some times I cracked up at her dialogue.
SpoilerEspecially at the hospital when she was on pain-killers. I actually put the book down and laughed pretty hard.

I did feel like some of the plot was predictable, but I still enjoyed the story.
SpoilerElliot and Jules obviously were bad, I sensed it immediately. And of course Mrs. Green, otherwise known as Jealous-Obsessive-Angel-Ex-Gf to Patch was just fishy from the start.
I didn't feel like the ending was rushed at all, despite my last review. It was action-packed and answered questions that were presented throughout the story.
SpoilerJules ended up being the boy featured in the Prologue, a Nephilim that Patch took possession of to use his body. Patch's plan all along was kill (well technically not kill, as the sacrifice had to willingly be the sacrifice) Jules's bloodline (who was Nora) to become human again. But nope, he falls in love with her, and so now he's Nora's guardian angel

Overall: I didn't rate this any higher than my previous rating because I still had some issues with it, but I wasn't disappointed, either. I'm genuinely interested in this world and will be continuing on with this series!

Read Originally in 2010: 3 Stars A lovely title, a lovely summary, a gorgeous cover... who wouldn't buy this book? The beginning of this book sucked me in like a vacuum, but as the book continued, the vacuum effect faded off and the story began to drag halfway through. I did like Nora and Patch's relationship, but Nora's constant "I should run away from him," "He's trouble. But I can't draw myself away," was getting predictable and a little annoying by the end. But I do enjoy the characters. I thought the ending itself was rushed, and I predicted the villains by the middle of the book, unfortunately. Becca Fitzpatrick would be a good writer for crime, and that was kind of what Hush, Hush was, but with Supernatural and Romance all in between.
Overall: I would recommend it if you like a dark story with crime and romance intertwined.

It was okay. Something I needed while fatigued with pneumonia.  Kept my attention when many other books weren't

People saying this series is similar to Fallen by Lauren Kate needs to go re-read Fallen. As someone who loves the Fallen Series, Hush, Hush is nothing like Fallen.

Vee annoyed the living sh*t out of me, who the hell names their kid Patch??? Sounds like a name you would give to a dog... I will not be continuing this series. Don't come at me for having a different opinion.

None the less, really well written, I will definitely check out the rest of Becca Fitzpatrick work, this series wasn't for me tho.
