My favorite book from my youth held up

I really loved this book and I've read it at least 3 times, so obviously it's quite awesome. Everything about Patch Cipriano, the fallen angel, makes me want to drool because he's just so yummy. Nora didn't make me want to hurl, which is a nice change from other books where the main girl character is so mushy, head-over-heels for the fallen angel. The whole idea of archangels, Nephilim, and fallen angels is confusing but in a good way because it keeps you coming back for more.

Really?

Title: Hush, Hush
Author: Becca Fitzpatrick
Genre: YA supernatural romance

Where I got it: Border’s liquidation sale ($3.75!)

One sentence: Nora’s life changes after she meets the mysterious Patch and is dragged into an ancient immortal war.

Themes: Angels, romance, mystery, bad boy,

Main character: 2/5
I wasn’t particularly thrilled with Nora. She was uninteresting, whiny, and unable to stand up for herself in any way. There also wasn’t any sort of gentle introduction to their relationship or romance

Secondary characters: 3/5
The only reason that this gets any higher rating than the main character section is because of Vee- I loved her character, even if she was oblivious and completely stubborn. Patch was your typical bad boy/blatant rip-off of Edward Cullen. I’m always a fan of the bad boy character, but I found Patch a little over the top and his treatment of Nora repulsive.

Writing style: 3/5
Nothing distracting, but also nothing particularly special. The relationship between Nora and Patch was written well, even if I didn’t agree with the plot of how it played out. The last third of the novel picked up the pace and I really started to enjoy how Fitzpatrick wrote out the action scenes.

Plot: 4/5
I read this before I read Fallen, so the idea of fallen angels was completely new and interesting to me. Fitzpatrick’s world was well thought out and had some fascinating plot twists. Although predictable, the plot was very entertaining, especially the action in the last bit.

Best scene: The showdown in the school

Positives: Entertaining plot, clear writing style, good action scenes

Negatives: Boring characters, simple writing style and plot, felt like a Twilight knockoff

Ending: Some good action scenes. Tied up the conflict without answering all the questions.

Verdict: I had higher hopes with all the hype, but it was cute and entertaining for what it was.

Rating: 6.8 / 10

I really enjoyed this book!

I was actually pretty surprised that the depth of the book actual held out for a teen read! I absolutely love when books throw curl balls throughout the storyline, without it being unnecessary!

Not being able to guess who the bad guy was as the book went along made it even more entertaining to keep reading. I’m intrigued to see what the sequel has in store

I rated it 4 stars though, because I really saw a lot of similarities to twilight and that threw me off a bit.

I originally read this book back when I was in 7th-8th grade and remember it only as being a book I had liked with the fallen angel plot, a iron deficient FMC, and a smooth talking MMC.

Reading it now as an adult, I can say that my tween self definitely gave this a bit more credit than it’s actually probably worth. I still think the fallen angel plot is interesting; it’s just no where near as fleshed out and intricate as it could be.

On top of that, the FMC makes many questionable decisions and the MMC is described as being vaguely ominous and threatening throughout almost the entire book but somehow they just ✨work✨ and are in love at the end.

I’m a sucker for a dark fantasy romance so I like the concept here and the pacing of the writing did a good job of keeping intrigue but it just feels like some parts were too random and unnecessary, like the two-ish scenes with Marcie Millar. Fitzpatrick was definitely setting up for a sequel with bits like that, which I did also read as a youth (I remember even less about it than this first book) and do not have a desire to read again as an adult.

I also think the author did a good job of setting the scene, the dark/foggy/gray vibe felt consistent.

Overall, I give this 2 stars for the concept and nostalgia. I’d love to see a non-YA version of this that has more depth!

Better than i thought it would be

PATCHHH ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

That’s about it.
