Absolutely fascinating character study of the man, his wife, friendship and rivalry and then return to friendship with Thomas Jefferson, and everything else in between.
So funny to see other historical figures come and go in the periphery, knowing that some of them will come to the forefront as I continue to read about each American President.
Highly recommended.

A great companion piece to Jon Meacham’s “Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power”, as this one will now reside next to my own copy of Meacham’s as I’m sure Adams and Jefferson would’ve wanted to not be too far away from each other. Perfectly understandable now why this book received a Pulitzer Prize along with an HBO series adaptation. Incredibly moving and insightful to the thinking of a Founding Father and President, but also a diplomat and a farmer, along with how important his relationship was with his wife and family and how he “thought” during the Revolution and subsequently after for posterity, in this case for me. Can’t recommend it enough!
History really does repeat itself.
Abigail and John Adams correspondence was heartwarming.

David McCullough has a wonderfully entertaining way of writing that absorbs you into the details of what he is writing about. This is a balanced account of the life and times of John Adams.
McCullough endeavors to paint all sides of John Adams characters not just pigeon holing him as a grouchy or vain but as human. Good, bad, beautiful, ugly; it's all here.
The defense of the British soldiers involved in the Boston massacre. His amazingly solid relationship with his wife even though they didn't see one another for years on end. The sacrifices he made for his country. His relationships with his fellow Founding Fathers. It's all here and more.
A steady effort that paints a much broader portrait of this most important man.

A really tremendous biography of the second president and a great overview of the tumultuous and fascinating time he lived in. Fans of Franklin, Jefferson and Hamilton may be less than pleased with the portrayals here, or they may reconsider their opinions. Either way, not to be missed.
Wow! A fabulous book, and a stupendous accomplishment to document in such detail yet still in such readable prose the life and times of John Adams. The times, too, were interesting not so different from today although clearly Adams was a rare breed of brilliance and honesty that we could use more of these days.
