The characters were lovable, well-developed, amusing, and occasionally sassily relatable. The mood was well-written and engaging. The writing was good, flowing smoothly, and pleasant. The plot was captivating and easy to follow, and the plot surprise was brilliantly executed.
Recommend for dragon lovers.

This book is one of my favorites and has for a long time. It was the first book that really got me into reading.

Solid book to start off the series for sure. You do have to start off learning about the different dragon tribes, their alliances, the war of Sandwing succession, and learning a little about the Dragonets of Destiny. So the beginning can feel very vanilla until the plot starts to kick in. The setup in the prologue does make sure you know the stakes involved, and the brutality that this war is causing and WILL cause more. This book needs to do a good job to make sure you stay invested enough to see how this will all end, and it definitely did the job for me seeing as I am now currently on the third and final arc of this series.

I read the "text" version of this book after I read the graphic novel version, because my cousin reads the graphic novels. To review this book alone without comparison to the graphic novel, I thought this was so good. Even though it appears to be middle grade fiction, I think it would be suited even lot for folks who like YA. I would've loved this in middle school, and I seriously enjoyed it as an adult too. I couldn't believe the prophecy, conspiracy, violence, and dark images found in this book; I don't mention that in a negative way either. You go in thinking this is a fun dragon adventure and then it gets so deep. I understand why my 4th-5th grade cousin felt like she wasn't ready to read this because of how dark even the prologue is. But this book has even more depth and detail into the characters and the lore than even the first graphic novel had. Now as I continue the graphic novels, I'm wondering how they're going to include some detail revealed in the actual book and missed in the first graphic novel down the line... I loved this.
