This is why I hate YA contemporary romance. It's built on buzzwords and tropes and stereotypical characters who lack dimension and personalities beyond Disney Channel Original Movie archetypes. The narrations of both protagonists are whiny and juvenile, more akin to middle schoolers than freshmen in college. This book does a disservice to teenagers because it portrays them as wholly childish and immature rather than giving them complicated personalities and depth beyond, "I'm so anxious and antisocial my mom is my best friend" and "I'm so hot you can't swing a cat without hitting someone I have dated/slept with/flirted with/will flirt with." Yes, teenagers have sex, but rather than explore the complications and true feelings associated with this, this book trivializes everything and slaps a pretty cover on it and says, "this bad boy can fit so many marketable buzzwords in it." There is no substance to this book.

The premise of this story kept me interested the whole time. The characters never felt over-dramatised or fake, I was rooting for them the whole time. I do think the ending felt a little rushed, but I would still recommend this book!

I LOVED this book. It always hits different when I heavily relate to the main character. And the character growth
I KNEW they had to end up together. Like come on. I love the journey to that though. And also expressing their feelings for each other by saying I love you?? So queer coded. 10/10. I love their dynamic and the growth on both parts. I wanted to pull out my hair the way they were both hung up on other girls who weren’t the fantasy they had in their heads. And also Alex saying she wasn’t good enough for Natalie or anyone. Because Natalie really drove home how unloveable she was when really it just seems like she liked being the one that Alex chose at the end of the day. Ugh. What a bitch. The amount of notes I made in the book increased exponentially in the last like 25% of the book hahaha. Accurate

She Gets the Girl is very sweet and really shows the fear and hope that comes from leaving high school and going to college. Some of the plot is rather convenient, but it works out well enough for the genre.
