I continue to love this Icelandic author that I found last fall! This is the 2nd book in her Children's House series and as soon as I return it to the library I have the 3rd ready to pick up! It has been awhile since I have been motivated to read back to back books in a series. These don't HAVE to be read in order, but the personal side of the story (relationships, jobs, etc) will make more sense if you do. Another crazy case starts with finding a pair of severed hands floating in a hot tup. Detective Huldar brings in child psychologist Freya back in for help as some things lead to letters written by a young child. If you are fan (and have the stomach for) Karin Slaughter books... then you need to start reading Yrsa's. I have a feeling I am going to clear her entire adult backlist in 2023.

Ég er mjög ánægð með þessa bók. Þarna var ýmislegt sem kom mér á óvart og ég var allan tímann spennt yfir því að vita hvað gerðist næst.

As I started reading this book, many questions arose and my curiosity was fueled by the potential events of the previous book in the series, although in general I understood what happened. From the prolog, I felt that this book would win me over.
The writing style was very reminiscent of Slaughter, in particular that the writer provides the reader with small pieces and little details about the people who make up the complete story. I was curious.
About a hundred pages before the end, I thought I had figured out who the mysterious killer behind all this was, though I hadn't found the links between some sub stories. Luckily I was wrong, otherwise I would be disappointed. Hulgar as a character irritated me in a ridiculous way, and this is evident in the final score of the book.
Overall, it's a book I really enjoyed. Many may disagree, but I personally support the idea that child molesters should be tortured in the most brutal way, as well as those who help "covering up" such cases.

Takk takk

Too macabre for me
I love Yrsa Sigurdardottir's writing and I always look forward to each new novel. The first in this series had been a great read, but this one was just too dark and gruesome for me. This is a line Sigurdardottir always treads, usually successfully, but this book crossed that line for me. It won't stop me looking forward to the next one, in the hope that it won't be quite so gruesome, but it does make me unable to recommend this one.

Read this as The Reckoning. As good as all of Yrss Sigurdardotter’s books always are. Very bleak though.

Toimiva Nordic Noir dekkari, jossa tosin on aika karu kerrontatapa. Jatkaa Perimä-kirjassa aloitettua tarinaa.
