I knew this had a lot about Mormon fundamentalism, but it's almost exclusively that. A long, detailed, discussion of the origins and shifts in fundamentalist LDS. It was too frustrating to hear about the manipulation and abuse over and over. I gave up.

What a great book. Krakauer is an excellent writer who weaves several threads together throughout this book. Religious people probably won’t enjoy it, as it tends to not spare any words about how faith can be used to justify (as has been) any number of atrocities. In the end, the author supports his premise with surprising clarity. Highly recommended

I am even less religious upon finishing this book. Take from that what you will.

Totally fascinating. The cast of characters (as it were) is gigantic which makes it sometimes hard to listen to because you can't keep track of who is when and fits in to the time line. Otherwise, awesome.

Fascinating. Well researched but compelling writing makes it more interesting than just reading a history book.

"Into Thin Air," it's not. Krakauer spent three years finding out all there is to know about the history of Mormonism, especially the violent offshoots that have turned into cult-like enclaves. I'm glad I know about this deeply upsetting story. But, the pacing was slow and the telling was less than engaging. Should I read his book on Missoula? I'm not sure that I will.
