Audio version. Holy moly. That book was intense. And finding out it’s a YA novel makes it even more so in my opinion. The novel takes place in WWII. There was a horrific maritime tragedy that cost 9,000 people their lives, 5,000 of them children. This book is about characters who were aboard the ship that sank. Trigger warning for horrific tragedy involving children. This book left me feeling raw and torn open. Why would I want to feel that way after reading? The author’s note at the end of the book summed it up beautifully in reference to not forgetting the past and the ability books have for bringing people together. It was a really poignant and intense reading.
A beautiful, heart-breaking, and captivating story! The characters are all so unique and the story just comes to life! I highly recommend this book to those who love historical fiction!
Powerful three-narrator novel on WWII refugees trying to escape war-ravaged Eastern Europe, culminating in catastrophe on the Wilhelm Gustloff ship. When all is dehumanized, humanity sometimes shows up.

Libro que si estás pasando por un mal momento, os recomiendo leer. ¿Por qué? Porque, por lo menos a mí, me ha ayudado a apreciar mucho más mi vida y lo que tengo. La novela se sitúa al final de la segunda guerra mundial, y, obviamente, había muchísima miseria humana, pero es importante recordar que sigue habiendo guerras en el mundo y hay personas bajo situaciones que probablemente no podemos ni imaginar.
Esta novela nos narra la historia de varios personajes (diferentes puntos de vista) que deben viajar en pleno invierno a un puerto situado en Prusia (actual Polonia) para allí embarcar y navegar hasta Alemania en condición de refugiado. En referente al contexto histórico, la acción transcurre en el año 1945, cuando ya se sabe que Hitler va a perder la guerra y las fuerzas rusas dominan toda la parte del conocido bloque soviético.
Durante el trayecto, nos vamos familiarizando con las penurias de la guerra, el hambre, la pobreza, el sufrimiento... además de ir aprendiendo de nuestros protagonistas (pobrecitis). Pero es que lo peor es que cuando los pobres llegan al barco, llamado Wilhelm Gustloff, el barco es atacado por submarinos rusos.
Lo que más me ha impactado es que la autora ha hablado con supervivientes y expertos sobre el naufragio. Es decir, es un relato basado en hechos reales y, la verdad, ojalá que no lo fuera porque es un acontecimiento horrible y no entiendo que no se hable de él.
En fin, a mí me ha hecho sufrir mucho, pero lo he disfrutado. Y no le pongo un 5 porque me ha faltado más en el final. QUERÍA SABER MÁS y eso le cuesta el 0,5 :P

Tremendous. I truly enjoyed the pacing (short chapters, each told from the perspective of a different narrator) and couldn’t put it down. As heartbreaking as it was exhilarating.
it's hard to put into words just how much i love this book. my heart aches so much right now, both with happiness and sadness at the stories that were told in this novel. as the author mentioned in her notes following the conclusion of the novel, the specific stories and the characters might have been fiction, but the historical events were real. i loved everything about this book. i loved the 4 different main storylines, but also all of the secondary characters as well. florian and joana were incredible characters, but emilia was my favorite (my sweet baby angel). if you love excellent writing, unbelievably awesome characters, historical fiction, or just a damn good book, please read this!!! i would honestly recommend this to anyone and i can't believe i hardly know anyone who has read it.
Would have been a 4 star for me but I hated alfred and don’t think his part was even necessary.
