This book was a no for me - I didn’t connect to one character, and I felt like the main character was so attached to her friend and I actually thought they were husband and wife at the beginning, until the middle of the book when it became clear they were best friends. I got so bored ab the story, there was a murder but nothing was being done to even prove it was a murder??? It drove me crazy and by the end of it I was skimming the pages. I would’ve DNF if it wasn’t so short

The story follows Fi McKinnery and her best friend, Robyn, who is about to debut as drag queen Mae B. Eve, another drag queen mocks Mae B, and later on Fi finds her dead. It is assumed the death was a nasty accident, but Fi thinks Eve was murdered.

I have never before been let down by a book which I thought had so much potential! This was my Amazon first reads December pick. I love drag queens and I love murder mystery books so I was sure this was going to be a good one.

I just found the whole story really daft and childish. I think it would have been better if the story tone was written in a way to target young adults.

A fun read with a deeper theme about family and figuring out who you are in early adulthood. The plot is more of a kind of coming of age, as Robyn takes his first steps into drag performance and transitions from a patron of the club to one of the performers, shifting his best friend's relationship to the club and it's performers as a consequence. This is further complicated by a murder, initially treated as an accident by the police, which the best friend (and narrator) cannot accept is an accident.

The impact of her doubts on their relationship, and the parallel story of her own realisations about her identity and direction, are central to the story. There is an interesting twist to the murder storyline that also brings the relationship storyline together.

There were points where I was not sure about the narrative but it was interesting enough to keep going and I really enjoyed it overall.

A compelling murder mystery made all the more fabulous by its diverse cast of characters. Fun and whimsical. Serious and tense. This was an engaging and fast-paced read for me, and I never did figure out the whodunit.

Kindle First Reads freebie. I chose it because I really liked the premise - and the cover - but it took me a while to get through as it dragged (no pun intended) quite a bit until the end.

The whole Fi/Robyn fallout just didn't make much sense to me, and the final reveal also left me scratching my head. But I liked the characters.
