3.19 AVERAGE

i would give this a 3.5. this book was WACKY WTF. cotton is a fucking freak who likes dead people, him telling magnolia to be quiet and don’t move……bro. i didn’t really feel like there were many big plot points to build off of except the timeline of mama brown’s ghost? it was all a little confusing to read tbh. but i felt myself being grossed out more than engrossed in the book. a lot of dark themes throughout the book. and it feels like it takes place in another time, but it’s supposed to be present day, it’s just in a super rural area. the house is giving the same vibes as Mexican gothic. this feels like a fetish write from the author. and cotton’s whole business???? FREAKY, the last coffin scene put me over the edge, im happy there wasn’t much after that.

Yeesh—this one just didn’t work for me. Despite the intriguing premise, I really disliked the writing style and felt the story went absolutely nowhere. I couldn’t form any kind of bond with the characters, which made the emotional beats fall flat. I kept waiting for it to click, but it never did.

In the end, it felt like a waste of my time, and honestly? I just didn’t get it. A disappointing read that left me more confused than moved.

First off I really did enjoy the writing of this book. The storylines felt a bit disjointed and I had trouble understanding exactly how everything was supposed to be related. The characters were so creepy and the MC was not easy to like. I felt like the pacing was a bit off and it kept sucking me into different genres, which was a distraction. The ending felt SO rushed and like everything was tied up in a nice bow, which doesn’t really make sense for this novel. For a debut novel I think this is a great start and I look forward to what else this author puts out!
