Conceptually I liked this a lot. My problem with it was that there were several points where the dialogue felt a bit stilted and bordering on heavy-handed for my tastes.

This graphic novel is a horror story about a Muslim woman whose apartment building is haunted by racist and Islamophobic spirits. Imagine all of humanity’s worst impulses embodied by deadly ghosts—horrible, right? The artwork is hauntingly beautiful—you’ll want to rush through the pages because of the suspense, but the panels are worth lingering over.

While I’m sure this is a great comic it also reminded me why I don’t read horror. But I guess the queasy nauseous feeling I got reading this is an indicator that this was a good horror story. The artwork was also incredibly creepy and will probably give me nightmares.

This has been getting a lot of good reviews and it's film rights were optioned on the release of the second issue so I was looking forward to reading it. And if I'm honest it didn't disappoint. It is extremely creepy in places and the story and graphics pull you along. That said though it didn't altogether impress, as its political and social commentary element felt way too heavy handed and in your face. A far subtler treatment would have sold the story better I feel. I also feel that the ending was a little rushed. It felt like they had more to say but were constrained by a 6 issue format. Pushing for an 8 issue format and giving the story more time to breath would have enhanced the piece.
Enjoyable and worth a second read at sometime and it will be interesting to see what a film treatment of this will look like if and when it ever gets made.

A truly scary graphic novel that entwines racism and the paranormal into a brutal story about a haunted apartment complex.

Another APA month read!

This was GREAT and really scratched my itch for a horror story!

It was creepy af and the illustrations definitely fit the bill and added such an unsettling atmosphere to the whole thing.

I also loved how the creators included their pitch package at the end so we can see the publication process.

The commentary on race, religion, and whiteness was a bit convoluted. I wasn't sure what the author was trying to say other than yeah, race is complicated.

As a WOC, I understand where Aisha and Medina were coming from, but I didn't really understand the woke white guys in the story. (Not that I understand woke white guys irl when they play devil's advocate with race, so I guess this is true to life.)

But other than that, I'd recommend this if you're looking for a horror read with really creepy illustrations.
