Hosseini is somehow able to convey the most tragic tales into something not mortally depressing. The unquestioned relationships that exist in Afghanistan between the genders and classes are highlighted by the interwoven lives of the 3 main characters. The oppressive boundaries inherited by the generations are unthinkable to an American woman in the twentieth century, but Hosseini carefully reminds readers of another world. The characters were relatable and the plot was thick. I would highly recommend this book. It's hard to say, but I may have enjoyed this more than Kite Runner.

A beautiful and important novel. Gripping story. Brutal and devastating at times. Thought-provoking.

Beautiful and heartbreaking. This book made me sob. I learnt a lot about Afghanistan's history.

This book feels especially hard hitting now with the Taliban governing once more.

This is my first Hosseini, and I'm looking forward to reading The Kite Runner, once I've processed the emotions of this read.

This book is so heart-breaking and leaves a mark after reading. I liked that the author draws attention to the issue of women's rights in Afghanistan: he shows the harsh side of family life, where a wife endures everything from her husband simply because she has no right to object.
But at the same time, he shows that not all men and marriages are like that - and that it’s not just religion or customs that make people act like beasts, but more so their level of intellectual and spiritual evolution as human beings. You truly empathize with the main characters, understanding how unfair everything is - the war, the laws of society - yet you also genuinely rejoice in their small victories, their unbreakable spirit, and their determination to be happy no matter what. I will definitely read more of Khaled Hosseini's books - as soon as I recover from this one!
