This memoir was all over the place in timeline but knowing the years was helpful to place things. I didn’t know Josh Brolin wrote poetry till I read this. He’s prose is beautiful. He’s also unbelievably raw, but not the type of raw for everyone.
I listened to him read this audiobook and the chapter titled “she hadn’t been home for 6 weeks” (I believe was the title name) was intense, and stressful, and maddening. However, it was human and real. The grit of this memoir isn’t for everyone but I always enjoy hearing and reading others stories, so I’d recommend this to anyone who feels the same.

I grabbed this book after seeing a series of interviews Brolin did where he talked about his mom and how he grew up. Each story seemed more dangerous then the last and it really pushed me to pick up the book. I liked the book quite a bit and it was fun to read the stories I had seen in interviews in more depth, however, it's though not without its flaws. The storytelling is gritty and raw, offering a glimpse into Brolin’s experiences that is unflinching. At times the pacing feels uneven, and certain moments dragged on, while others could have been explored in more depth. Overall, it’s an enjoyable read for fans of Brolin and those interested in behind-the-scenes tales, but it may not fully hit the mark for everyone.
