What would happen if a gang of the dumbest pirates ever met up with Darwin? I'm not sure that anyone has ever wondered that, but if you have, this is the book for you. After the idiot Pirate Captain (who, by the way, is idolized by his crew) is tricked by his nemesis, the pirate boat ends up in the Galapagos Islands. There, they mistake Charles Darwin's boat for one carrying all the Queen's gold, but end up making friends and give him a lift back to England. There the adventure really begins with missing brothers and cross-dressing pirates and pirates disguised as scientists and an evil man with a desire to remain young.
Weird, yet funny. I found myself laughing out loud several times throughout this book (although probably many less times than the author intended). This book doesn't make any sense...but that's kinda the point. Reminds me of Christopher Moore. In a good way.

I picked this up at the library on a whim and sat and read it during my lunch break, and it was exactly what I wanted to read at the time. It's really funny and clever.

Nearly lost me when they ate the monkeys, but I’m glad I hung in there. (Sorry for that spoiler about the monkeys.)
started off decently comedic then became overrun with rampant misogyny
This is much better than The Pirates! In an Adventure with Ahab. This novella is probably best suited for high school age readers or older that appreciate sarcasm and slapstick and are at least somewhat interested in science. Imagine Capt. Jack Sparrow crossed with Jim Carrey in a science adventure with Darwin. Do read all the footnotes, as they add to the humor.
Things I love: pirates! Adventure! Scientists!
Things I do not love: this book. :(
For some reason, I just couldn't get into it. There were some giggles towards the start, but there were so many allusions to prior books (despite not being a formal series, from what I can tell), and it was SO MEANDERING, that even I (segue-prone as I am--yes, this is a case in point) couldn't follow what was going on sometimes. I found the footnotes interesting, but essentially disruptive. Overall, I finished the book, but it often felt like a chore. I'm just going to have to go and play some Monkey Island to make up for it--so really, everybody wins. Now, what was that about a three-headed monkey?
