I hope Lena is less of a main character in the rest of the series because her chapters are the reason I had to dock this one a star. That girl needs therapy ASAP.

While the characters are both good and both annoying as hell, as well as being semi believable (aka Lena). The storyline was a little darker than what I have imagined from reading a couple of Slaughter's other books and I'm not fully sure how much I really enjoyed it, other than being happy that it's fiction. I find that writing books whether it's fiction or non on a subject like this can be rather touchy and can be quite a hit or miss for the readers, so Karin Slaughter went on a risky subject when she wrote this book and published it.

I can say for sure that this isn't a book that I'm going to be keeping on my shelves.

When Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver is forced to shoot a young girl outside the local skate rink it sets in motion a much larger turn of events involving the children in the town that nobody could ever have foreseen and has Sara Linton questioning her judgement on every child she has seen in her clinic. Can they work together and get to the bottom of what’s going on before anyone else gets hurt?

As per usual Slaughter has done a brilliant job at building the story and keeping me gripped. Her books are so readable, once I start one I just can’t help myself and end up blasting through it.

We’re a few months on from “Blindsighted” and we see Lena Adams back trying to do her job as a Detective after the incredible trauma visited on her.  She’s physically recovering but clearly not doing well mentally and the case in “Kisscut” certainly doesn’t help. The further into the book I got the more I could see her slipping into how she is in “A Faint Cold Fear”, which would be the next book in this series but I read it a couple of months ago so I’m a little out of order.

I wasn’t overly happy with Jeffrey’s behaviour towards Sara at times. He claims to want to get back with her but he was, quite frankly, extremely rude and disrespectful both towards her and about her a few times in the first half of the book and it definitely had me thinking Sara would be better off without him. I also feel he should have done more to push Lena to get the help she so obviously needs.

The subject matter was quite tough in places and the book should definitely include content warnings, I’ve shared some at the end of this review in case anyone wants to check them before reading for themselves. Realistic crime thrillers are always more frightening to me than horror books that are based in fantasy. The very real, evil acts that people carry out against each other are definitely more scary than any made up boogeyman.

I’m really glad that I’m now reading this series in order as I’m really enjoying seeing the characters develop and with each one I read I can’t wait to get to the next one. I’m trying to ration myself cos otherwise I know I’ll get to the end of these Grant County ones and want to buy a load of the Will Trent ones!

Slaughter’s writing is absolutely spot on for this genre. I genuinely have no complaints. She weaves the different parts of the story together so well and at the end of each chapter I’m always wanting more. I also love the way she splits the book into sections by each day of the investigation so we can see how we’re following the story in real time as it were.

Another excellent book from the Queen of the Crime Thriller.

Content Warning: Child abuse, paedophilia, incest, female genital mutilation, gun violence, suicide

I enjoy a good thriller but this one was too disturbing...

This one is a little dark and I had a few WTH moments, but it is a sad reality. and Karin Slaughter is not afraid to go there.

Insane amount of awfulness in this story. Slaughter, as always, is very graphic and leaves nothing to the imagination (unless you want to imagine a nice and tidy ending - which this does not have). I figured out what happened by the middle of the book. All the TWs in this book.

audiobook.
not a fan of this second book in the grant county series. really disturbing content and felt like it relied more on that than an interesting mystery. ended up listening to last 3 hours on 2x speed.
going to continue with the series even though this one was a miss
