My fav book ever.
Its heart breaking
I could literally write like 500 essays on this why cant we do this at school 😭

PEETA. 💔 my heart breaks for him, he gets reaped for the Hunger Games (a literal fight to the death) WITH the girl he’s loved forever - like since he was 5 - and did everything he could to help her. (Also he confessed his love to her MULTIPLE TIMES and she just thought it was all an act) then, he thought she finally noticed him and she fell for him, until after the Games, when she had got BOTH of them out, he picked some little flowers for her 🥲 and then Haymitch was all like ‘keep the act up congrats’ and then Peeta, who DID NOT KNOW it was an act found out that the girl he’d loved since forever was just pretending to love him.
————————————————————

Haymitch. He wins his games yeah? Like 20 or so years ago. Being the only living victor for District 12 he has to mentor EVERY KID on his own (thats like 48 kids) and ALL of them died over his watch. He probably feels so guilty for it because he was their last hope and he couldn’t help. Then Peeta and Katniss arrive looking like they actually might have a chance. When he learns more about them (especially Katniss) what tge flip must ge be thinking because-
1: Haymitch and Katniss both had a little sibling who they cared about more than anything
2: Katniss comes in with the EXACT same pin that Haymitch’s ally Maysilee Donner wore in his Games, who died in his arms
3: Haymitch and Peeta both had someone who they loved, who they would give the world for, Haymitch could probably relate to what Peeta felt about Katniss to him and Lenore Dove.
4: Both Katniss’s and Haymitch’s dads died in the mines im pretty sure
5: their also both from the seam
Thats also probably why at first Katniss thought Haymitch hated her, he didnt, but he hated that he saw so much of him in her and he remembered what they did to him. He was probably scared that if she survived the Games, they’d do something similar (or just as awful) to her. He probably couldn’t stand looking at her and her reflecting everything that he was before he went in his games.
——————————————————————
I will probalby have more to add when the sunrise on the reaping come out

Also im forgeting alot rn cuz i just cried at this book 😭

this is maybe my fourth or fifth time around reading this, although first time on audio. the choice made by the narrator to pitch up her voice for katniss’ dialogue really didn’t work for me- it reminded me of the way katniss described the way the capital people speak, and the girlishness and innocence that she puts on
after she and peeta win in order to trick the capital
. i think it was intended to show youth, but regardless it didnt work, and i ended up missing some of the dryness of katniss

Reread for the upcoming 5th book.
Although I would like to know more about the background happenings in the Capitol and/or with Snow, I understand what Suzanne Collins was doing by writing this in 1st person perspective.
Nothing beats reading Katniss slowly understand her own mind. Or her figuring out a plot in the Games.

Finally reading the series before the new book comes out! This one was good, but notably it’s my least favorite of the movies so maybe I’m being a harsher critic. The writing is amazing of course and the characters are great. I think knowing a rough idea of what’s going to happen due to seeing the movies already gives me a perspective that I wouldn’t otherwise have. I’m such a PEENISS stan for real like I’m obsessed with the two of them together, so this book really makes me wanna shake Katniss’ shoulders LOL.

I'm re-reading the entire series before Sunrise on the Reaping comes out. This book was so nostalgic for me. Hunger Games was one of the first series I ever read as a child and I think these books still hold up really well today.
