This was the least interesting Maisie Dobbs novel to me. The mystery itself is fine, two Indian women are shot and killed. The brother of one of the women comes to Maisie to solve the case because the police didn't do much of an investigation.
I do wish there had been any kind of explanation of how all the dots connected. Based on what was written on the pages, Maisie shouldn't have been able to solve the case. She does solve it, but mostly with information she appears to have either gained in between chapters or simply made up to fit the facts.
I know from the book list here that there is at least another novel to come, but reading the end makes it feel as if it's the last novel in the series. If this is the last novel, it's a disappointing end to an otherwise entertaining series.

Spoiler
Maisie closes up shop, makes sure Billy and Sandra have jobs, reviews all her old cases, etc. Even her dad gets married off! The only unresolved issue is her relationship with James, poor man. I'll be curious to see if the next novel takes place during her Indian travels, or once she's returned from her trip.
One of my favorite series, and I love that Jacqueline Winspear has her character grow and change as the series progresses. Interesting mystery about the murder of an Indian woman in Britain between WW1&2. It leaves several possibilities for Maisie's future as the novel ends.

I am an avid Maisie Dobbs fan, but this one just fell short. The coincidental intersection of the two seemingly unrelated cases that Maisie had been assigned stretched credulity. And the neat ways in which Billy and Sandra find other jobs before knowing that Maisie is considering closing up shop to embark on her trip are too convenient. This seems to be the "tying up loose ends" installment of the series.
