The year is 1933 and even then there are murmurs about another war in Europe. Maisie is tasked to find out what happened to an Indian gentleman’s sister who had been murdered two months previously. Maisie has other unfinished cases on the go so she finds herself a little strapped trying to solve them all. As she digs in deeper, she finds that there may be connections between some of her other unfinished cases and this particular one. This book is a crucial book in the Maisie Dobb series as she is facing a number of personal life choices that will affect her life. But she does not let that distract her and digs deeper into the Indian community in England in the 1930s in order to solve the murder of the young and remarkable Indian woman who was found shot by the canal. This is a remarkable historical mystery series and I for one cannot wait to see where the next book will take Maisie. I highly recommend this series for those who love historical mysteries.

I really like the way she writes. I enjoy the mystery and story overall in all of her Maisie Dobbs books but I'm frustrated with Maisie's never ending journey to 'find herself'. There seems to be no end in sight.

This was among my favorites. The mystery was creative and complex, and I felt like Majse was finally making some good decisions for herself!
