This book was so good it had me talking to strangers about it. My first Kennedy Ryan and safe to say it definitely will not be my last. Saving the rest of my review for book club 🥂
A modern day love story meets a Harlem Renaissance romance - a story within a story. This book was beautiful, emotional and may just be my favorite read of this year.
I read Can’t Get Enough first, which is Kennedy Ryan’s latest book, and even though the premise is different, I couldn’t help but feel that the characters are very similar in their thoughts and actions. Even with different focuses, the dynamics still felt familiar.
I really appreciated the spotlight on lupus. It’s one of those conditions I don’t know much about, so I found that part informative and important. One thing I love about Kennedy Ryan’s writing is how she consistently highlights the struggles of Black people in different contexts.
However, I didn’t like how the issue with her sister was handled. She did some really trashy things, and not being apologetic about it just didn’t sit right with me. The fact that all of that happened when the main character was already going through so much made it worse.
I don’t think Bonnie Blue’s POV was necessary. I get why the author felt it added something, but to me, it just made the book feel longer than it needed to be.
I’m still waiting for another Kennedy Ryan book to top Before I Let Go and This Could Be Us. Those two are just on another level, especially the first one. Pure masterpieces.
