I think I need to just expect a really good cry anytime I pick up a Kennedy Ryan book. I feel like I went through every emotion with this one. There’s a family betrayal that just cuts so deep at the beginning that I sincerely didn’t know what to expect or if it could be resolved. Then there’s the power dynamic between the main couple that gave me pause, but honestly I’ve learned to trust Kennedy Ryan. Reel focuses on Neevah Saint, an extremely talented up and coming actress and Cannon Holt, her director on the new biopic film that is about to kickstart her career and fame. Their attraction is immediate, but they don’t act on their feelings for one another precisely to avoid the potentially harmful impact their relationship would have on their career. They hold out for as long as they can but ultimately begin their relationship discreetly only to be outed before they have a chance to tell those closest to them. There’s a few scenes however where Cannon makes it clear that he will always always always choose Neevah above all else and every single time that he does I just wanted to yell “damn right!” He’s supportive, he’s loving, and most of all he’s steady in his devotion to her and that just made me love them so much as a couple.
Readers should heed the trigger warnings for this book though. Neevah is living with a chronic illness and the emotional toll of the illness may be triggering for folks. Her relationship with her sister is also a major source of tension throughout the book and while there is a resolution and happy ending, the initial betrayal is really heavy. All that being said, I cried through a lot of the scenes with her family—it was healing to read through Neevah’s journey as she learned to vocalize her pain and try to work on healing herself and her relationship with her family.

You know a book is good when you reread immediately after finishing it! This is a masterpiece and is now my favorite KR novel.

Libby audio. I waited months for this. And I loved the narrators , characters. But it was too heavy for me. That's why I didn't finish it. I just couldn't make myself continue on. She has lupus.

If you enjoy Tia William's A Love Song for Ricki Wilde then you have to pick this one up!
Grumpy Sunshine, Her-Boss, Slow burn
I think this book was too long, and it was annoying to listen to 2 stormiest at once the whole book. I get it but then you get all the way to the end and you don’t know how their story ends. The MMC was literally a saint.

This is my first Kennedy Ryan book but it won’t be my last!! It was a unique story in the world of romance and I liked the mix of history as well as exploration of a disease commonly experienced by Black women. It was a bit longer than I think it needed to be while there were some parts I could have used even more of but overall an amazing read that I would recommend again and again!
