I really enjoyed the plot of this. It kept me interested and reading. I felt like the writing had some.. jumps? Like.. parts could have been built up more. But I still devoured it in one day, so obviously it wasn't exactly terrible. And, given the opportunity, I'll likely read the next book just to see what happens.

Solid 3 stars. It’s a good start to a series and I’ll check out the next book.

My rating is waiting on how book 2 is.

Really well written description of the world that made it feel real with very good characters for the most part. The last twists were a bit hard to deal with. But overall a well done novel.

When it’s revealed that Queen Melusina is Neara’s biological mother… after Drayce already said that the Queen had married his father?? That makes them stepsiblings, even if he denies that connection. Stepbrother romance is a big nope for me.

And I was holding high hopes for this book, too. Sigh.

Started off really good, but got more disappointing. Thankfully a short book

2.5 stars. I breezed through this book.

Is it possible to have too much plot and also not enough at the same time?

That's kinda how I felt. But also since it was such a breeze I don't find it to be such an issue.

Curious to see how the story progresses.

Read this within a few hours. A fun dark tale, but the pace and reveals came too fast, reminded me too much of ACOTAR, and the characters lacked the depth needed to hold the story together

Honestly a bit hard to put into words why I didn't enjoy this book.
The story feels forced. The MC is forced to undergo three "trials" and you would expect those to take a while. But it seems as if they took a short two day trip around the land and finished everything. Major plot twists are revealed early on and thanks to that everything happens as you'd expect it to go.
It just felt so flat overall. Plot flat, character flat, everything flat.

BUT 2* because I loved the ruthlessness of the heroine. Let's just kill and burn a bunch of soldiers. And not think about it for chapters and question if it was the best decision. Nope she is just cool with it.

And ACOTAR. I hate comparing Fae books with ACOTAR, because SJM doesn't hold the rights on every Fae story. But the whole setup with the curse, the gease, the trials.. even that the male love interest controls shadows... Her becoming some special kind of strong Fae.. getting a ring from some monster as a test..

And my last issue.. the names. I read Darcy instead of Drayce (made it slightly awkward) and Neera instead of Neara... A "me issue" but Neara just doesn't flow. And didn't help that I read the book in one go till 5am.

I really wanted to like this book and it was a fast easy read. But just so flat.
