A great story to read aloud to children, which I usually do, but this time I read it alone and still enjoyed the strong characters that are typical of Roald Dahl books. Much better when reading aloud to a class full of children though!

I was feeling nostalgic for Roald Dahl and decided to pick up Matilda. I do see why I loved Dahl as a kid and this sparked that admiration, however, as an adult I can see things I may have once missed.
1. Pretty much ever adult is irresponsible, dumb, hapless, helpless or evil.
2. Matilda was the original Harry Potter and I’m pretty sure Trunchball is arguably the first Umbridge.
3. Adoption doesn’t work that easily. There is a lot more steps and paperwork.
4. Roald Dahl may have been inspired by Carrie.

Read it as a kid; was reading for 'do I want to keep this'; I gave it 50 pages to drag me in, and it didn't.
I can see why much younger me liked it, and the short chapters are individually delightful, but the overarching plot is doing nothing for me, and I'm not inspired to keep going. I don't like that Matilda is applying punishments that seem arbitrary and meaningless to the recipient, and I'm not particularly enjoying the humour. Probably still works for kids, but I wouldn't recommend it for adults.

What a great timeless classic. I loved it as a child and now my 2 and 4 year old love it too. You will never get bored of this one. Illustrations are brilliant.
