why did it take me so long to pick up this book??
i read three other books by this author back in mid-2020: [b:To Love Jason Thorn|58762117|To Love Jason Thorn|Ella Maise|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1628875951l/58762117._SY75_.jpg|46154294], [b:To Hate Adam Connor|58762145|To Hate Adam Connor|Ella Maise|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1628876168l/58762145._SY75_.jpg|49007248] and [b:The Hardest Fall|39880512|The Hardest Fall|Ella Maise|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1558999735l/39880512._SX50_.jpg|51027757], and thoroughly enjoyed all of them, but was hesitant to pick this one up. with the length, it’s a little intimidating for a contemporary romance. 350 pages is a maximum limit for me.
and this book is longggggg. like seriously long. probably longer than it needed to be, but i adored every minute of it, so i ain’t complaining. the first quarter was pretty slow for sure and plot wise... yeah, this doesn’t really have a plot. it’s literally 520 pages of Jack and Rose falling in love and being obsessed with each other. and again, i ain’t complaining.
i was too busy obsessing over the characters to give a fuck. im gonna get a bit spoilery now, so just beware.
Jack Hawthorne... this man can trick me into marriage, any day of the week.
the moment he helped Rose paint her coffee shop, i was a goner for this man.

why was this man helping her paint a fucking wall so sexy to me??? i– i was lying in bed, squealing like an idiot bcos this man rolled his shirt sleeves up and began painting a fucking wall.
he had the aloof, mysterious and grumpiness down to pat. it provided just the right amount of intrigue – i think grumpy characters can be difficult to pull off sometimes since you obviously want your readers to connect with them while still maintaining that grumpy, distant facade. so it’s not easy to balance the two. but Ella Maise did so with Jack perfectly in my opinion. i just love that man

Only a few seconds later, his palm circled my wrist and stopped my movements. I only felt the heat of his skin for a quick second, and then it was gone.
Taking the roller from me, he put it back down and then started to roll up his stark white—and extremely expensive—sleeves.

rose and jack.
His smile softened, but it was still there.
“You’ve been counting my smiles?”
“Trying’ being the operative word here since you like to hoard them like a squirrel hoarding his nuts.”
“I’ve smiled at you, Rose.”
He lifted his hand and tucked my hair behind my ear. I didn’t think much about it because I was busy shaking my head at him.
“You haven’t.”
“Maybe you weren’t looking.”
-
“I’d share my door with you any day, Jack Hawthorne.” His brows dipped together.
“What are you talking about?”
“If you’ve never seen Titanic, I can’t be married to you,” I said seriously.

3.75/5 stars. One of my favorite tropes. Chemistry and character growth was great. This would've been 4.5 for me if the main plotline was different. Still, I really like Maise's writing style and plan to continue reading her standalones.
