3.5 stars! I was SO into this in the first half, but as the book went on it really started to drag and I'm SAD. I'm definitely still interested in reading more from Ella Maise because I truly was so into the tension between the characters, but the book as a whole just went on too long for me. Womp :(
okay listen, this book is long but it could’ve been longer and I would’ve read all of it. I am obsessed with Jack and Rose. I think this is one of those couples that I will think about years from now and just look fondly on the time that I read this book.
The writing style was so good, and the characters were so well developed, and I loved the relationship, and how it started with Jack, just being completely standoffish with Rose, and her kind of pushing his buttons to the point where he finally gave in and talked to her, and they truly just cared about each other so much and that was just so special to read
anyways i love them

It wasn’t bad, it was just boring. It’s a plot driven story with an almost nonexistent plot. Any of the interesting aspects or conflicts that seem like they’d be a problem like the evil cousins and exes were dealt with off page. I’m not a huge drama fan, but I still want to see action happening.
There was like 600 pages of them getting to know eachother. It wasn’t a bad thing but the dialogue was a bit stunted and I had to hold myself back from skipping pages.
One thing I liked was the CSF plot. As someone with chronic illness, I liked seeing an underrepresented disease being shown. The most unrealistic thing was having the disease being diagnosed on the very first appointment and not waiting months of testing and unresponsive doctors to figure anything out. But still it was a cool addition that brought them closer.
Maybe because I read darker romance, the big conflict for the 3rd act break up was very boring. And it didn’t affect their relationship at all except for a week of her coming to terms with it and forgiving him. There’s no cheating just to lyk.
It was a chill book but it made me sleepy. That’s all.

"I was Rose and he was Jack. We were doomed from the very beginning with those names. You know... the Titanic and all that."

From what I’ve seen online, people seem to either love this book or they hate it. Frankly, I don’t see what the hype is about.
The book started out just fine - marriage of convenience, grumpy/sunshine - standard romance novel faire. Rose is set to get married. She has a contract with her uncle to use one of his properties to open her own coffee shop. It’s all good. But then, Rose’s fiancé has unexpectedly left her. Then her uncle dies, leaving their contract, and her dream, in limbo.
Jack, her uncle’s lawyer, proposes a “business deal” to Rose. She marries him, he gets the property, she gets the coffee shop. She agrees.
But at the 28% mark, you start to realize there’s something else at play. There’s more to it for Jack than just property.
Of course, they fall for each other and then the truth is revealed. And the truth just sucks. But, HEA and all that jazz.
Honestly, the author could have played this so many different ways. There were better ways for this conflict to go down. Jack could’ve been a noble guy. Rose could have been stronger. In the end, I didn’t like either character and I’m super bummed because they could’ve been great.

Ugh I loved this book even more the second time. Jack is so sexy and Rose is such a likeable character. This book is sexy, fun, and has some serious notes. Love a good fake marriage trope.

really trying to understand how this tedious bland book has so many good reviews, it’s so boring and shallow. first, about jack, there’s a big difference between being grumpy and being downright rude and unbearable, he’s just and asshole with no personality; about rose, she annoyed me a little, look, you can be a good person without being a fool.

Just the most perfectly told story of sort-of-enemies/strangers to lovers
This is my first Ella Maise read, but it will definitely not be my last. Such a beautifully written story that had everything I could have hoped for. I loved everything about it. From the multifaceted characters, to the underlying intrigue. From the mutual pining, to the humour. From the angst, to the denouement. Jack and Rose will have a permanent place in my heart. Please tell me there's going to be more about Sally and Owen though!

my very VERY first marriage of convenience romance and i ABSOLUTELY adored Jack and Rose. Jack calling Rose 'my wife' had my heart skipping a beat every single time. This book will always be a grumpy sunshine fave for me

I’ve decided that marriage of connivence is one of my favourite tropes, it always has me hooked! This was a slow burn but I loved it! This book was so hard to put down because I couldn’t stop swooning over Jack!
Jack Hawthorne is everything and Rose was hilarious!! The way they leaned on each other from pretty much the beginning was so sweet and I loved that Jack tried to keep his distance but he couldn’t because he was a massive simp
