The story starts out with Rose attending a meeting with her uncle's lawyers about the inheritance he left after passing away. He left a condition stating that one of his buildings go to Rose's husband. Rose's fiancee had broken off their engagement a couple of weeks prior to that, so she couldn't get anything from the inheritance. Jack, who happens to be a partner in the law firm steps in and offers to marry her in exchange for owning the building. She in turns gets to open a coffee shop at a fraction of the rent, which has been her dream for a long time.
This was a super slow burn romance. I actually really loved the first half of the book and I was positive that I was going to give it 5 stars. However, towards the second half of the book, the story took a turn, where Rose got sick and Jack took care of her. It was just really boring and kind of a turn off too. It was just a lot of details about her nose dripping everywhere. As for the characters, I loved Jack so much. Rose was also super endearing. They both had amazing chemistry and the details were absolutely superb.

Here for it. Loved it. Ending was a disappointing level of anticlimactic but I adored the rest.

The romance was cute I guess, but there was basically no plot and the whole medical issues plot line was kinda boring and felt like it was only put in there to add sexual tension, which it failed to accomplish.
if I read “he growled” one more time I think I’m gonna loose it

I’m on a re-reading spree and I was excited to revisit this one. I’m upgrading my previous 3 stars to 5 because i enjoyed it that much. Jack was surly and bitter and i found it all too endearing. I even read the extra shot which i dont think should count towards any of my goals lol.

I'm going to start with the biggest question on my mind: why the fuck was this 500 pages? I'm in the minority; I usually love a long romance. I think me loving the Addicted series and Infini (both over 400 pages in some cases, some reaching 500+) shows that. But this? This was almost 50% of the book of Jack and Rose doing the most pointless, mundane, boring drivel. They literally had two chapters of them watching paint dry. I think the length was supposed to show the slowburn of their relationship, but I'm calling bullshit on that, because this wasn't a slowburn. There wasn't a time where Jack and Rose weren't into each other. I know, because I was subjected to the words "forearm porn" more than once. So it's to show the slowburn of the relationship that didn't really need it. So, maybe you think the characters carry it, yeah? Yeah, no.
Jack and Rose are two of the most insufferable protagonists I've ever had the misfortune to read about, and because this book was so long, that problem was amplified so much. Let's start with Jack. Jack is an arrogant, rich prick. He's rude to everyone he deems "beneath" him and on more than one occasion walks over Rose and her wants and wishes because "he knows better." There's also a really annoying subplot where he's just jealous of any man who is either remotely friendly to Rose or who she is remotely friendly to. This is not cute. This is what the kids call a red flag. I also thought, right from the jump, him pressuring her and forcing her to make a decision about the marriage in that very moment was creepy and controlling. I also just don't find guys who actively try to piss off/annoy/push the buttons of their partners charming or cute. I find them to be irritating assholes because they are. And then we go through this whole book knowing Jack feels some big guilt about something he did to Rose (and don't worry - we'll get there, but like this insufferable book, I'm going to make you wait for most of the review to be ultimately disappointed in the end. Just know Jack is Hiding Something and it is An Obstacle for him and Rose that he feels massive Guilt About). And when his secretary tells him -more than once- that he needs to tell her, he straight up threatens to fire her. And he never treats any of the people who work with/for him any amount of respect or kindness. So yeah, anyway, Jack sucks.
But to be fair, Rose is not any better. She's twenty-six going on six. I'm so sick of authors trying to write quirky girls and being bad at it. I'm so sick of them writing sunshine characters and infantilizing the fuck out of them. Rose does not read as anything other than the thinly veiled manic pixie dream girl that she is. She's nice to everyone! She's so awkward and rambly! She loves kids! She's Changing Jack For the Better. I'm going to stop dancing around it: Rose is an idiot. I know it's annoying to have Jack always be there for her, taking care of everything, but I wouldn't trust Rose to do anything by herself either. Which is doubly frustrating because Rose apparently mostly "raised herself."
Rose was at her most annoying during the sickness plot, that didn't show up until over halfway through the book and was inherently meaningless. I think the author just wanted to show what a Good Guy Jack was for taking care of Rose. But overall, the sickness did nothing but prolong this fucking "plot" for two or three chapters and then go away so Jack and Rose could go off and finally have sex. The thing about the sudden illness that's so frustrating is that the doctor said Rose could've developed it from a fall and waaaaaay earlier in the book she had fallen (she and Jack argued about it) and I thought that was tying in somehow, but NOPE! It was totally random. And all of that is mostly wrapped up by the 70-75ish% mark. So what's the rest of the "plot"? A whole lot of nothing.
Until, wait for it, the 90% mark when we finally realize what Jack feels Guilty about. And this is where it's going to get the most spoilery, so be warned now. Basically, Jack paid Rose's then finace off to break up with her 1) because he was apparently using her but 2) because Jack himself was interest in her. So he forces her into marrying him and resolves never to tell her that he paid said fiance off. Or that he paid her shitty cousins off to leave her alone. And he comes at her with "It's for your own good" bullshit. Rose, understandably, freaks the fuck out and wants nothing to do with him. She's mad for like a chapter, and Jack literally goes back to stalking her like he did after he first saw her (yeah, I forgot to mention that's why he looked into her fiance. He was stalking her lowkey) but then Jack serves her divorce papers and she IMMEDIATELY pivots and she's like "No, I don't wanna divorce, fighting in a marriage is healthy!!!" and I'm like, girl this isn't healthy though. And Jack has a self aware moment of like "I can't believe she didn't make me work harder for forgiveness" and I'm like yeah, same bro, me too. It's almost like she's a dumbass. And not once for ANY of this shit does Jack ever apologize. Not for tricking her, not for lying to her, not even for hurting her. Once again, fuck Jack Hawthorne.
Anyway, they end up together and I get to sigh in relief that this miserable experience is done and over with. Worst book of the year? It's more likely than you think.

I'm giving this one star because I have to since goodreads doesn't do half/no stars in any meaningful way. this might be the worst book I've read this year. it definitely is in terms of length. full review to come, but I'm really upset and disappointed.
also, fuck both Jack and Rose Hawthorne.

No. Nooooooo. No. Not for me. I think this author just writes really undesirable characters imo. Just bad.
