4 stars//Physical Book//This is one of my favorite movies, so I was really excited to enjoy the book for the very first time. I really enjoyed getting to read more in-depth about Matilda's hijinks with her parents, though having seen the movie definitely gave me an even greater appreciation for that part of the book. Overall I found myself smiling at several parts of the story, just like with the movie. It was great for my inner child and I'm glad to have finally read it!
Matilda is the story of a young girl who loves books and knowledge, but is born into a family that is ignorant of her talent and neglects her altogether. When she is only four, she begins walking to the library alone and devours the children’s section, book after book, and soon she moves onto the great authors of classic literature. The reader also discovers that Matilda has the power of telekinesis, and this allows her to play small tricks on her family. When she reaches school age, Matilda has to ask her parents to enroll her in school, which will give her the opportunity to have friends and someone to care for her. Matilda gains several new friends and acquaintances, and even catches the eye of her teacher with her incredible level of intelligence for such a young child. The story continues in the way that Matilda and her teacher, Miss Honey, begin to become friends and form an alliance against the Trunchbull, the awful school headmistress.
The illustrations are limited, and they seem to be almost the equivalent of pen scribbles, but they complement the story nicely. They also have shading and quite a bit of detail, which gives the reader the opportunity to have a solid image of the story in their head.

October 2015: This was so fun to read again, especially after seeing Matilda on Broadway this summer!
March 2018: I loved listening to Kate Winslet's interpretation of some of my favorite childhood characters. Definitely worth the listen!

I read this when I was really young for the first time, and read this countless times while growing up. This is still my favorite book.
