I really enjoyed it. It wasn't horror-scary, I can't sleep anymore because I'm scared, it was more like creepy horror, where the atmosphere is more important. The tension was built step by step, from the ghost that doesn't do anything, to the tv that wouldn't stop. The dream sequences, especially the first one, were just perfect. That holy sh*t moment, I just can't put the book down, I have to keep reading. I loved the fact that the characters actually evolved and ended up with layers as we learned mire about their personal history. And, boy, all of them were so messed up. The animal companions part was interesting and I liked that he didn't kill them off at the beginning. Instead, he made them a powerful weapon against the evil ghost. Their first fight was awesome. Bammy was great, I would've liked to see her more. About the ending. It was ok, what I expected, honestly. I actually didn't know the author is the son of Stephen King

This is the type of ghost story I enjoy. Filled with dread and an indelible taint, aging heavy metal rocker Jude and his girlfriend Georgia fight for their lives against an avenging spirit unleashed on them by and ex-girlfriend’s family. Their desperate journey from the present predicament takes them into the deep south and their pasts to try to find a way to ward off the spirit and escape with their lives.

Hill delves into the nitty gritty of what makes his characters tick. While they start off as surface-level cliches, over the course of the story he digs down into the deeper issues behind the creation of their personas and then tears them down.

I really liked this book. I thought the dialog was smart and authentic. The characters interesting. And the story was dark and different. I listened to this book on audible. The performer was excellent.

I did not finish this.

I got to the part when Judas and Georgia is at the motel and about to leave for Georgia's grandma (can't remember what she calls her. Bammy?) and I decided that I've had enough.

Was looking forward to this. This was my second attempt to read because I was feeling frightened and alone the first time and only had the courage to try again now. Bit of a disappointment now that I've (quite) read it.

I have hope that his other book will turn out better.

Read this for October's #1book140.

Better than I thought when I first started it. Had a few false starts reading the first few chapters cos was too busy (and partly cos I was too scared to continue).

I liked the characters, the action, and the ghost. A good read. Not what I was expecting.

I wasn't sure about this book because I'm not really a fan of Stephen King (don't kill me, please!!) and I didn't know how much of his dad's style would be on Hill's novel, however I was pleasantly surprised.
The fast-paced rhythm and originality of the story got me hooked from start to end. I didn't find it as terrorising as they told me it would be, but maybe because I was expecting to be scared every moment.
I still recommend it to any fan of suspense!

I adore Joe Hill. This is not as good as Locke and Key or The Fireman but it was excellent, especially for a debut novel. Ironically, this felt more like what I thought Stephen King's books would be like before I started reading him (Joe is Stephen's son). This is definitely a horror novel and has a couple of things that felt like they were just there for shock value, but overall it had a solid, scary story and great characters. The main character is such an ass but you end up liking him anyway and rooting for him and his groupie girlfriend to defeat the ghost that's after them. I'm not sure if it was intentional but the scene wig the door reminded me of the Dark Tower. I know they've done some connections on purpose, which is one of the fun things about reading both of them. There was a little bit of animal violence. You can see it coming and skip over it though and it made sense as part of the story instead of being gratuitous.
