I really enjoyed the writing in this book, and how it could have been a formulaic mystery, but instead added so much more depth and emotional background to the story. I also enjoyed the characters and the time period, and although I might not get around to the rest of the series anytime soon, I know I would definitely like to at some point! It did get a bit explainy at the end, adding lots of words to what I already knew/had figured out, so it’s not quite five stars for me.

Lovely little mystery that was entertaining and comforting at the same time. Narrator for audio book was wonderful. I will continue with the series.

Just the kind of story I needed. A compelling mystery, characters I immediately feel invested in and a surprising number of lessons on how to be an empathetic person and listener. I look forward to making my way through the rest of the series.

Maisie Dobbs opens her own investigation offices and her first case—a wife who lies to her husband about where she goes while he works. What sets this mystery book apart is that while Dobbs quickly discovers where the wife goes, she doesn’t consider the case over. Dobbs once says to her mentor Maurice Blanche, “You heal people.” And that is what Dobbs is about, not just solving a case, but about healing people.

Would like to give this book a 3.5. I'm not generally a mystery reader, so I was less into that aspect and more into the way the author intertwined plot with details of World War I and its aftermath. Definitely worth reading, and I'm likely to read more of the series between other genres.

I thoroughly enjoyed Maisie Dobbs. I love her character and I always like reading about the wars. That ending was a kick in the gut though.

It wasn't until the end of the novel that the prose really started to come together for me. I felt I was reading a set up to create a character for future novels. That being said, I am now totally engaged with Maisie and am looking forward to the next one. Lots in common here with the times of Downton Abbey. She does a great job capturing that era.

Have been meaning to read this series for a while and finally started it. Terrific first book introducing Maisie Dobbs, a female detective/ psychologist. It weaves her background story into her solving of a case. Fun read, I will definitely continue the series.
