Ellen Hopkins

4.06 AVERAGE

Definitely needed to de-stress after work.
Was this the correct books choice for de-stressing? Most likely not—but sometimes we don’t make the best choices. I know that Hopkins is Lutheran and might not know the LDS faith as well, but the main character (Pattyn’s) constant “battle”with faith is written incredibly well. The book holds up pretty well considering it was published in ‘06 (and is thus older than several of my students).
medium-paced

3.5 stars.

This book is absurd. I honestly think two stars is super generous. I'm only giving it that much because I still love Ellen Hopkin's writing - her formatting and her eloquent writing within verse is fantastic. But I hated the main character, the romance, the ending, and pretty much everything in between. I regret reading this.

Pattyn...oh Pattyn, I feel the pain.

Going up in a very strict house where religion plays a key role must be hard.
Pattyn own curiosity is what get's the ball rolling.

If she wasn't so restricted and had more open talks with Pattyn, none of this would have happen. When the
Spoiler fight happens can't handle her emotions on her own.
Again, open communication she probably
Spoiler wouldn't had punch or fight that chick.
In the end I'm glad how the story unfolded.
Spoiler It helped her out, she escaped...good for her!

This may be my favorite book of all time. I read it two weeks ago & I can’t stop thinking about it. A must read for anyone who enjoys reading.

I listened to the audio book, so I didn't realize until maybe halfway through when I was reading reviews that it was written in verse. Maybe the format explains the lack of character development. The characters were all very stereotypical and the love story seemed rushed and unbelievable. And the ending was just...strange. I didn't know her very well though so that may be why. I did like the idea of the story - a coming-of-age in an oppressive culture (even if the author's characterization of the culture also seemed stereotypical) and the writing was beautiful in places.
