Everyone should read at least one Ellen Hopkins book in their lifetime. The ending killed me, but what a bittersweet story of love, identity, and grips of family secrets. Not a hearts and flowers romance which for once, I wish it would have been. 😩

Lots going on here but I was captivated by the prose - the way the author put words together to tell the story - just as much between the lines as in them.
Not easy to read but completely worth it.
All people should have access to this book. While fiction, there are truths here.
Thank you, Ms. Hopkins, for writing!

A quick YA page turner written in verse takes us into the private life of a young teenage girl. In the span of one summer, she questions her LDS upbringing, discovers her body, lust, and love. All this while trying to survive her abusive father and discovering family love and encouragement from an aunt for the first time. TW/CW: suicide, abuse, purity culture, pregnancy loss.

I group in three fundamentalist churches; I am now atheist.

*this book is banned. It would’ve helped me navigate things I went through during my adolescent years.
I can relate to much of this book. Hormonal changes, wanting to get out of religion and questioning it, being told I needed therapy because I was sexually active, and other purity culture lies; also, moving away from the ā€˜things/persons’ that were ā€˜leading me astray’.
My step-father was not an alcoholic but he was very abusive. These parts hit a little too close to ā€˜home’ for me.

TW: Abuse and Suicide

3.5ish

When you were big enough to cross the street on your own, did you ever wait for a signal, hear the frenzied approach of a fire truck and feel like stepping out in front of it?
Did you wonder just how far that rocket ride might take you?
When you were almost grown, did you ever sit in a bubble bath, perspiration pooling, notice a blow dryer plugged in within easy reach, and think about dropping it into the water?
Did you wonder if the expected rush might somehow fail you?
And now, do you ever dangle your toes over the precipice, dare the cliff to crumble, defy the frozen deity to suffer the sun, thaw feather and bone, take wing to fly you home?ā€

Pros:
- Love Hopkins writing
- Was difficult to read at times due to the subject matter (could be considered a con but I don't see it that way).
- I cared about the main characters and some of the others as well
- Some amazing and really touching quotes in this book
- NOT my fav of her books but not my least fav

Cons:
- Took me about two hundred pages to get really invested maybe more actually...
- Predictable at times- usually her books have a twist and this one I was like "okay.."
- Ending was a cliche that kind of bothered me
- I was mad at the end- because of how it ended and what happened (which can be a pro or a con)

I've never read any of Ellen Hopkins books so I had no idea what to expect. A student recommended that I read "Burned" so I finally picked it up, and was unable to put it down. The story of Pattyn and her struggles w/ love, religion, and family is quite vivid throughout the book. There are surprises around every corner and the ending was more than unexpected. Pattyn lives in a world that I can't believe still exists, in our own country none the less. I would recommend this book to anyone!

Pattyn goes to live with her aunt after a fight with her father. She finds love an a stable home at the ranch, only to return to her family at the end of the summer.

This is another amazing read by Ellen Hopkins. I did not expect the cliffhanger ending though!
