I cried.

As an ex-Mormon, this book seemed like such an interesting story. After I finished the book, it took me a while to stop crying. This is a story about finding family, love, and yourself. I really recommend this book especially if you come from a family where it feels like no one loves you.

Pattyn is labeled as a “problem child” by her abusive father and send to live with her aunt for the summer. Throughout those few months she learns what love is, experiences things for the first time, and genuinely enjoys her life for the first time. Her life is ripped apart when I few months later she loses everyone she loves and is disowned by her father.

This story covered a lot of hard topics; abusive parent, alcoholism, religious uncertainty, and death. All of these combined made for a really sad story. Pattyn never truly got to be a child/teenager because she was busy taking care of her younger siblings and forced to submit to her father (until she grew the courage to speak against him).

I get this is a series but this one almost ended with, "then they all died." It was like the end was written by a kid. Even if I liked the rest of the story, this (pun intenedes) killed it for me.

I loved Hopkins’s “Crank” series and figured I would try this one. I wasn’t sure what to expect reading from a religious point of view. But this ended up being a remarkable story of discovering who you are. I loved Pattyn and what she could do with her life when she was removed from a controlling environment. Her aunt was another wonderful character with a big heart. The narrator was a perfect fit for this story.
