This must be one of my favorite books that I've read this year. The POV changes often, but it simple to follow. I loved the setting and characters! The writing style was stunning. I highlighted all over the place, and will be buying a copy of this novel very soon. It is arguably my favorite Newbery, which is saying a darn lot. Read it now, though it'll make you tear up.

I loved this book SO much. Clare Vanderpool knows how to weave a story, even a complicated one with multiple narrators and two timelines. It was perfection and I didn’t want it to end.

Really liked it!!

Lovely interweaving of history told in two time frames about a young girl discovering something about herself in a town full of wonderful characters on the order of Richard Peck's A Year Down Yonder or even Kate DiCamillo's Because of Winn-Dixie.

Cute. Predictable, but in an okay way.

I didn't really LIKE this book until around 200 pages in. I'm not sure why it took so long, but I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I read this book so sporadically. The characters were lovable and engaging and the story, around page 200, was lovely. I admit I was a bit choked up at the end. If I had read this book as a child (age 12?), it would have easily gotten 4 stars.

I groaned aloud when I realized I was about to read yet ANOTHER Newbery award winner about the Great Depression. Luckily this book was more set during the Great Depression than ABOUT it, and I really liked the switching POV and the ongoing mystery. Definitely the best in the crowded field of Newbery Great Depression Books lol
