What a charming book! Twelve-year-old Abilene is sent to live with a friend of her father's in the town he grew up in while he works a railroad job for the summer. It's the middle of the depression and Abilene's not quite sure what to think of Manifest, Kansas, and the people who live there. But she realizes she might be able to get a clearer idea of who her father was and where he came from, so she starts poking around in the past. Two stories come together -- Abilene's and her father's -- with the aid of a mysterious "diviner" who lives on the edge of town. A great read with no technology, magic or gossip, but one that shows the past can be complicated, too.

I don't usually wait this long to read the Newbery winners... but this one was worth the wait! Loved the story line! Loved the way the two stories wove together... probably didn't hurt that I was driving through Kansas as I "read" the book and could really visualize the surroundings... but just an amazing story! Loved this book!

This book had different perspectives, switched narrators and different formats (letters, advertisements).
Cute book! It was the perfect summer read. I really liked how the past came to meet up with the present. And it’s a very cute book. Reminds me of time Sawyer or that time. She was searching for her dad and she found a lot more. Great for All types of readers.
